i need a new set of simple radio trigger that are reliable. i have a set of the cowboy studio ones that work well enough, but there are multiple times, often, when the flash wont fire during a shoot when it should and i miss shots.

looking for something reliable, not terribly expensive, no need for eTTL.

Pocket wizards are the gold standard but not cheap. The new mk3's are cheaper but still steep. Easy to rend and all studios I have rented all have them.

Cybersyncs and great and reliable and have some advantages if you have PCB/WL stuff. I have used them for years and they never miss from my experience...... bear in mind that if my lights are hundred meters away then someone is stealing them :-) I rarely am more then a dozen meters from the lights.

I've used Cybersyncs for longer distances and they held up really well. The only misfires I had were probably a few hundred feet and were alleviated by raising the trigger. I didn't have an extra one with me at the time to relay them, otherwise I would've done that instead. My trigger also began acting weird when the battery got a bit low, but that was readily resolved. I'd recommend them as a pretty good option.

I've been happy with the cheap-ass Yongnuos... I have 6, they all work, and seem to be 98% reliable or better. Have no idea on the distance, but I have yet to exceed it.

I'll second(or is it third) the cybersyncs recommendation. Affordable, simple to use, and reliable.

I have the RF602's and have never had a problem with them when I use them.

Got really ticked off one day when one wouldn't fire but then I found I had put it on a different channel so my fault.

+1

I have 4 of them, and they work through walls.

The biggest plus is that you can also use them as a remote for the camera. Huge, huge, huge plus. When I was out shooting osprey last year, the osprey was skittish when I was with the camera, so I set the camera on the hill pointed at the nest, while I went up to the top of the hill. And I used the yongnuos to trigger the camera.

It's awesome for self portraits to be able to trigger the camera and flashes. Luckily, I hate self portraits, so I don't need that feature too often. :)

There are these new ones called "Radio Popper". They are apparently very reliable and also not nearly as expensive as the popular Pocketwizard.

The radio poppers are in a copyright dispute with pocket wizard last time I looked they weren't available in most countries

I have 3 pocket wizards never fail me and can be used to trigger the canera with the right lead.

I have 2 remotes, one the little thumb-sized flat Niemke which can work quite well esp at a distance, so long as itès in a room. For example thatès how I shot Whereès Waldo with it, in a huge haymow. I was a good 30 ft away.

The second one has the antenna on the handheld part and a receiver that mounts to the hotshoe. It does work but I was really disappointed with it recently when I was shooting for both Kindling Queen and Perception. Good thing Ryan has a great sense of timing :-)

From what I know, they are shipping to US and Canada. I haven't read anything about Radio Popper being a in a dispute with Pocketwizard maybe I should look into this more.

You sure you're not thinking of Photix, who literally perfectly copied the shape and everything of PW's?

Radiopoppers existed with their TTL functionality before Pocketwizard had the same functionality on the market.

Also, Radiopoppers are not a whole lot cheaper than PW if you go the TTL trigger route, but their lower featured ones are more in the Cybersync price range.

I use pocketwizard's flex ettl supported system. Frankly, they're good, not excellent. They are supposedly great for quick paced off camera flash, but their support for 5dmkiii is still poor. You can work manually, but its annoying to not have the key feature i went the higher price for. On top of this, there is the rare misfire with that system. This is more isolated as an issue though, because for the 60d, they worked quite well

Given how i shoot now compared to how i started out with them, ild probably switch to all manual with the third iteration from PocketWizard, they're pretty gold standard for reliability . Then again, i plan to invest in a 3pack of Einsteins in about 8-9 months and that might just get me to go the paul c buff route all together.
