When I try to edit the foreground and bacgriound seperately with brightness and contrast there is inevitable a line of white or black between the two. Is their anyway to avoid this or get around this?

Create a new layer, select what you are wanting to work on, convert the selection into a mask, and blur it so the change is gradual instead of sudden. Then do what you are wanting to do to the layer, set blending and flatten.

This online course ('Adobe Photoshop Basics') might be helpful -- chapters 4 and 5 cover masks and layers, respectively.
