Just noticed, basic editing with the umbrellas. It's been a while since he had that (last one was Secret Self Portrait) |

AAAAAAAAH! Why now? I have had an idea for this since the first one - it hurt then not to participate because I love umbrellas. I don't even know if my model will be available:-( Bah! |

this has been gnawing at me awhile but i keep forgetting to ask....
i've heard stated on multiple occasions that there are edits you can make in basic that you CANNOT make in advanced.
can anyone explain or debunk that please? |

def sounds like an urban legend to me ... i think each editing level builds on the previous one, with MORE things allowable than the one below it (thinking of minimal on bottom level and expert on top level).

It's true. The key phrase comes from the advanced editing ruleset:
You may not use ANY editing tool to move, remove or duplicate any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer’s description of the photograph (aside from color or crop), even if the tool is otherwise legal, and regardless of whether you intended the change when the photograph was taken.
This phrase doesn't exist in the basic ruleset. Therefore in basic editing, you could chose to take a photo of say a deer in a field, and bump up the black point so high that your photo is now all black (likely won't score well, but the rules allow you to do this).
In advanced editing, if you did that to the same photo, you would have changed the typical viewer's description of the photograph, and therefore it would no longer be legal. |

Just another reason basic is a terrible ruleset. |

I'd debunk it, because in Basic you are allowed ONLY global editing, which affects the whole pic. Advanced allows for use of selective editing tools like desat, dodge and burn, cloning, smudging etc, not to mention up to 10 image captures while Basic allows for only one. Read and compare the two rulesets for clarification.
@ mike_311...sorry, don't agree. Anyone can clone out a powerline in Advanced. You can't do that in Basic so either you a) figure out a way to minimize the powerline or b) go and reshoot so powerline isn't even in the frame. Then you don't have to worry about it.
Though I enjoy using Advanced, to me it's still mostly 'Basic + cloning'. Having Basic and even better, Minimal, forces you to plan your pic a lot more than if you were shooting for just Advanced, whose 'up to 10 frames with identical settings' has never sat well with me. I'm a one-capture kinda gal. Not for everyone, not saying you're bad if you're not or good if you are. Just stating a fact that if you can get everything you want, in one capture, and not have to a bazillion things to it in PS or whatever post-processing program you use, all the more power to you.
ETA sorry for rambling but obviously I still really like Basic!

nah, don't do this - all that black where there was none before constitutes a new feature, is a no-no.
Basic editing ruleset:
You may not
"...use ANY editing tool to create new image area, objects or features (such as vignettes, lens flare or motion) that didn’t already exist in your original capture." |

not if you can do it by applying it to entire image.
creating a vignette occurs by selectively darkening (or lightening) parts of the image. |

?? we're not talking about vignettes
those are merely examples and not an exhaustive list

I guess I need to read the challenge descriptions more thoroughly. I did all of my shooting for this topic with bracketed exposures to get the dynamic range required by the subject. And now that is all a waste since this is basic rules :(
That was the second topic I wasted time shooting for in just one day as I shot for "Silence III" also and now it got taken away. I'm not exactly chomping at the bit to participate at DPC anymore right now. I could have better spent that shooting time organizing my sock drawer... |
