i have an entry that i plan to enter that will be low key, the problem was i had to have some light, since i'm using flashes, in order for my camera to focus. i pulled the exposure down but is it too much? its clear in my original that i intended most of the area to be shadow, but it was impossible for me to shoot it blacked out, the raw contain detail in the area that isn't visible in the final image.
just wondering if i could be punished for not be able to produce the image i want because i don't a have a more expensive lighting setup.

I think he's talking about the advanced editing rules in DPC. I could be wrong... |

If there are details present and you burn them away completely, you are likely going to be infringing on the Advanced Editing rules. |

Depends on how important the details are. |

That's my dilemma, there details there and id have preferred them to be lost in shadow when I captured the shot, but I need some light for my af to work since the main lights for the highlights are from the flash.
They aren't important details, just areas that are slightly lit. |

If you want SC opinion, you should put in a request (General Inquiry) for it with the a small jpeg of the unaltered original and the edit you want (put these in your workshop).

hey Mike,
why can't you put some light on the subject with a flashlight to get your focus, then turn off your AF and take the shot?... i do that all the time.

i didn't have a flash light, what i used was a small daylight colored lamp, aimed at the subject got the focus and aimed it away. i ended up with some light spill on my subject. i had to use it aimed, as opposed to have it just on as ambient so i would work because the light was still so dim that my AF wouldn't.
second, it really shouldn't matter, i ended up with the look i wanted in the final image. this is advanced editing, should I be expected to have to jump through hoops with my setup, especially when i can "fix it in post" as everyone says?

agree
dilemma is that "how important the details are" is subjective.
what one person may see as not important, another person may find important. |
