Adam, if a charismatic con man scammed a bunch of people out of their savings and left in the lurch, do you only blame the scamees, and not the scammer? 'Cuz that's what you're doing here.

I appreciate your optimism, but you realize this translates to writing off the debt of somewhere between 5 and 20 families. I'm not sure how this is garnering attention at all.

Oh, i fully realise it's only a drop in an ocean and isn't going to change the world but i like the idea and, yes, the statement behind it and helping 5-20 familes is good i feel and a start. I appreciate your cynicism and i know you are quite a charitable man Jason. Do you only donate to charity if it makes a huge significant change or are somewhere between 5 and 20 familes worth helping? Either way, i realise people may not like this idea due to it being an Occupy plan or they might not like the politics behind it but the reason i brought it to the attention of Rant and the reason it is garnering attention elsewhere is that it is quite an interesting and new idea. I'm sure you can grasp that.

Fair enough answer. ;)

EDIT: TO tell you the truth, I thought Occupy was going to use some of their warchest to carry this out. Didn't they get money far in excess of $3 million donated to their cause and weren't sure what to do with it? This would be a good place for that.

FURTHER EDIT: I think I was overestimating how much money they raised. I just can't win on this thread... ;)

I've no idea what happened to that but i do remember that figure. I'm not actively involved with Occupy although i'm obviously 'on their side' as it were.

It's not any huge sum yet of course. Still, i was shocked at how cheap these pennies on the doller debts were to buy. I've got no idea if a similar system works in the UK.

Truth be told, most people have no idea how finances work, the intricacies of mortgages and fluctuating markets. Couple this with the fact that the banks were playing fast and loose with loans offered to a great number of truly misinformed individuals and voila... financial crisis for a myriad of people.

How many among us have taken the time to educate our children about financial matters and what they truly can afford. Might be something that we could provide within an educational setting, but I would not hold my breath on that one.

I fully realize that ignorance is no excuse, but a large segment of our society is almost totally dependent on the information that they obtain from financial institutions.

As far as going into the hole, one needs only witness what is currently transpiring in Europe relative to the proposed austerity programs and wonder what the reaction would be in North America if governments decided to take unilateral actions to curb the deficit... I think the collective roar would be deafening.

This tangentially fits the thread, but I just had to share the chuckle. It was all an accident and both the think tank and the billboard company called to apologize profusely. We weren't really raising a stink, but the people staying at the mission were the ones upset. It would make for a nicely ironic photo. :)

Actually ray my parents did give me some education in finances....I had a bank account set up and was taught what I could and couldn't spend. Unfortunately that is a very rare thing. I was also taught in Jr high about the stock market. I had a teacher that gave us "fake money" to invest in a stock. We were taught how to do research (before people reallly had internet) and make our decisions on what stock to purchase. Then we had to follow our stock to see how good we did. Great lesson that I still use today.

Nothing wrong with the sign Doc. It reflects reality in a very succinct manner.

There truly is no free lunch... everything has a cost and just because the end user might not forfeit funds... that does not mean it is free.

My daughter gets a bevy of things that she perceives as being free... nothing could be further from the truth...but she is not the one burdened with the costs, which probably gives rise to her perception.

LOL. Ray, you grumpy old curmudgeon. Nobody was saying differently. The irony still exists.
