What's your favourite comfort food? (In Britian, what's called 'nursery food' can easily become comfort food in adulthood). It might be a nice warm bowl of soup, a certain snack food, or some favourite cereal eaten as finger food in front of the TV after a long day at work. Whatever you eat when you just want to relax and unwind and not feeling too adventurous.

Advanced editing.

Chili when it's cold out with hot rolls and a large glass of milk.

Well, this must be the shortest time between the original suggestion and the same challenge being announced. Less than six hours.

never heard of that term - and don't have the habit of eating when I'm not hungry - must be a female thing...
Can you give some more examples what kind of food that could be?

Easy to cook, satisfying for your mood as well as your stomach. Particularly effective for the melancholy!

Yep! Well we haven't had a food challenge for awhile and maybe it caught Langdon's attention right before supper :-)

@ h2...you're right, men and women do seem to have different eating habits and women do seems to have a more emotional link to food. Still, when you were a kid and were down in the dumps for whatever reason, did your Mom give you something that filled your tum and gave you that nice, cared-for feeling? If so, whatever it was would probably be counted as a comfort food.

I don't ever eat snacks... I tend to just eat a meal whenever I am hungry. Plus lately I have been on this weight gaining diet so it seems like all I do is eat rice and chicken... Lol.

Ahh, but even bodybuilders allow themselves the occasional non-diet meal. What's yours?

Comfort food can be a snack or junk food, but it can just as easily be a nutritious meal. I had a personal-trainer friend for whom hard-boiled eggs were comfort food. Lots of people tend to get the recipes of favourite, no-fail dishes when they leave home. I'm willing to bet my 4 sibs and I all have the same collection of recipes from Mum!

Honestly I never experienced that. Blame my Mom.

But I like food challenges anyway and Pauls link was very helpful.

All I can remember from when I was a kid is eating lard during winter because it was all my family could afford and it kept us warm.
I do have some comfort foods now though. Or in crisis situations I just eat the whole fridge (almost literally), lol.

My aunt's potato cheese soup...but to be honest, in photos, it looks like vomit.

I like lard in pie crust and refried beans, but I don't think I'd want to eat it alone.

Don't the screws and plastic bits get in your teeth when you eat the whole fridge?

You do know what the creamy filling in Oreo cookies was until the 1990s? Hint: No cream was used.

For those who don't know the term, in the US there has been a wave of comfort food restaurants as a backlash against Haute cuisine that was the standard in boom times, overly fussy architectural presentations with complex spices and exotic ingredients. Comfort food is the opposite, simple classic dishes, served in a straightforward manner often in homey environments.

Speaking of lard. Is anyone else old enough to remember those bags of lard with a little lump of orange inside. We were supposed to break the orange thingee and knead the coloring into the gray/whitish mass. After enough kneading, voila! BUTTER.

The kids were drafted to do this chore during the War. Yeah, it was WWII. And yes, I gotkneading duty more than once.

I've heard of that the packet of orange stuff, whatever it was, to be mixed in with lard to make it supposedly look like butter, but can't claim any hands-on experience...*snicker*

Peanut butter and bacon sandwiches on sourdough bread, toasted, of course.

Mmmm... got my idea.

Making it tonight.

Shooting pics BEFORE it gets eaten, obviously.

This food doesn't last long in our house.

Can't WAIT to do the challenge... as it gives me a reason to cook this dish again.

YUMMY YUMMY YUM YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only 9 entries? Are you waiting to swell your belly in the weekend? :)

That's what I have done! My comfort food is waiting to be photographed and then eaten ;)

I'm guessing that people are waiting til Saturday to do most of the cooking, and shoot for the challenge at the same time. Got my comfort food made, just have to shoot it!!
