Here's a list of the features in Win 7 that were removed in 8.
Missing Features
The biggest, for me, is the native ability to play or create DVDs. Seriously?!! At this point in time, MS wants to charge extra?

I agree that's weird. But you can get Media Center for free for now anyway. And Media Center has not always been included in windows (not all editions). But it's great if you have a PC with a tuner card...basically it gives you a fantastic DVR, with free TIVO capabilities (automatically recording movies with certain actors, keywords in the title, etc.)
Also, conversely, here's a list of new features...one of which is really going to be nice:
"Windows 8 also includes improved support for multi-monitor configurations; the taskbar can now be shown on multiple displays, and each display can also show its own dedicated taskbar. Wallpapers can also be spanned across multiple displays, or each display can have its own separate wallpaper." |

Features come and go throughout the different versions of any operating system. Some of the new ones sound pretty good. I use dual monitors at work. (very handy)
But to delete DVD burning? I'm still kinda stuck on that bit of wisdom.
When I heard the original stories about the surface tablets, I was highly interested. Win 8 on a tablet? Be still my heart! Real horsepower on a tablet, and the opportunity to take my software everywhere I go! Then it turns out, the tablets are locked down like everyone else's. only apps through the Microsoft store.... Very disappointing...
Which is not to say Win 8 is bad. For the price, I'll get it and try it out. Drives are cheap enough that a fresh drive, and Win 8. Is less than I paid for Win 7. For that, I am very pleased with Mr. Bill.

first, you can still create dvds, they removed the codecs to play dvds. im not sure of the exact reason but it could have been to keep costs down. i think Msft needs to pay for the right use the codecs, which is why you cant play blurays without additional software, the bluray codecs are very expensive and would add a considerable increase to the cost of each license. in fact bluray player software is about $100. which i why i rip the dvds to my hardrive instead, plus i strips off teh stupid previews and commercials.
second, dvds are going by the wayside for streaming video. they probably figured out its not a feature many people use.
third its far to easy install a codec to play dvds.
fourth just download media center, it will have the codecs required.
fifth it could have been an effort to streamline the OS, tablets dont come with dvd drives.
on media center, i highly recommend anyone with a tuber card use it. I set up my own media pc that runs my whole home theater and it serves media to the rest of the house. i have an antenna and two tuner cards, and supplement with netflix. i don't pay for cable and get all the local stations, cbs, fox, nbs, pbs, cw, etc in HD. i pay zero to Comcast for my tv use, and if anyone has ever used media center, you'll know its by far the best dvr you can get. the guide data is free and i have as much storage as i can fit into the case, currently 2TBs. its not for the faint of heart, setup isnt hard, but its not plug and play either, but i haven't paid for cable tv in over 3 years and i haven't touched my media pc for almost two years since win7 came out and i might reboot it every 6 months or so, its very stable and reliable, something my old dvr box wasn't.
