I have been having problems with retaining Internet connection. The connection would drop several times a day. I'd need to reboot the cable modem. Not a big deal, but it was getting old. For a while, I suspected the ISP.
After some experimenting, it seems to be directly related to use of Facebook. Sort of a high use site in an invasive way, I think. Whenever I would stay logged in to FB and leave a window or tab open with FB operating, my Internet connection would disconnect.
Have now manually cleared the browser cache. I still visit Facebook, but never stay logged in, nor leave a browser window open with Facebook operating. Have not had an Internet disconnect for 24 hours.
This is using Safari 6.0.1. The Internet disconnect issue could belong to Safari, but I have the same disconnect issue when using Chrome or Firefox. Leads me to believe it's Facebook which is the source of the problem. I suspect Facebook is gathering more data on us than we ever could imagine. It's almost enough to cause me to kill the FB account.
I'm posting this because others may be having similar problems. Wanted to share the results of my problem solving, so far. |

Similar problem here too - chrome and Firefox are also funky. 2 days trying to get to the bottom of it. |

Now you know why I don't have an account ... remember, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you ... ;-) |

I'm in my second day of continuous connection with my Internet Service Provider. No disconnect since I stopped keeping a Safari 6.0.1 browser window open with a logged-in Facebook status. I have kept the browser active during that time, so it wasn't Safari. The significant change was termination of the Facebook logged-in status. With 20-20 hindsight, it was foolish of me to trust that Facebook would not exploit the "door left open". It's pretty clear the Facebook connection was causing the ISP disconnects and the browser freezes. I'm posting this to heighten awarenss of my peers and friends about something suspicious underway at the big social media place.
Next concern I have is my iPhone with an incorporated Facebook app which pushes a lot of notifications. Could be a means of data collection... locations, contacts, purchases, behaviors. Yikes! |

An update following a week of testing.
Sustaining an uninterrupted Internet connection is the goal. Some combination of browser, Facebook and ISP was causing frequent Internet disconnects.
Procedures that work for me.
1. Never stay logged in to Facebook!
2. Never keep Facebook logged in with an open browser window or tab. (Very dangerous. Most likely to result in Internet disconnect. Don't know why, but I can guess.)
3. If putting MacPro into sleep mode, quit Safari 6.0.1 before sleep. (The browser sometimes freezes on wakeup.)
4. Remove old wifi names and passwords on Airport Extreme. Install fresh wifi settings and password.
MacPro (late 2006) with Lion 10.7.5 OS. If I could, I'd upgrade to Mountain Lion.
Have achieved success in sustaining about 99.9% uptime for Internet connection. |

I'd use another browser. Apple's done some things right over the years, Safari isn't one of them. The virtual memory used by it seems to explode out of control for no reason unless you're constantly deleting the cache. Third party plug-ins don't seem in to interact so shit hot either and can cause memory explosions.
My guess is that it's trying to page what you've browsing, but does it so incredibly inefficient and that's causing the majority of the problems. Especially since you mentioned it happens going and waking up from sleep.
I'd recommend Camino or Chrome, but if you choose Chrome, make sure to clear it's cache also fairly frequently. It doesn't suffer like Safari, but it's much worse than Camino. |

I do use Chrome some of the time. I agree with your comments about Safari. The Internet connection problems seem to be 20% Safari and 80% Facebook related. Together, they are poison.

Off the grid, eh? ('cept for DPChallenge.com, of course.) |

Originally posted by hahn23: Off the grid, eh? ('cept for DPChallenge.com, of course.) | I'm a programmer by trade, so the last thing I want to do is spend time with technology outside of work, minus my camera and video games.
The problem I have with Facebook is that it's entirely superficial. I'd rather spend time with my friends, in person. I see so many people everyday, either at work, or from running, or having beers after that, I don't need confirmation from people I don't hang out with that I'm important.
The cell phone is a different issue. I've purposely walked into people not paying attention while texting. Somehow they expect me to move, but I put the blame on them. I find people extremely rude everywhere all because of their cell phones. Laws are passed so you can't drive and talk at the same time, but it does nothing. As a runner, I've put my fair share of fists through windows letting the driver know of my disdain at his ignorance of both the law, and safety of pedestrians on the sidewalk and intersections.
I will get a cell phone when it's essential for business, but until then, I don't want one. All it's led us to become is a society of mindless automatons who need the constant fix of feeling important. Check out any street and count the number of people not talking or texting on their phone. It's quite small.
I can rant about this all day, but I'll stop here.
