I for one would much rather see a 4:1 ratio with Minimal to Expert challenges.(maybe have one Minimal, Basic, and Advanced each week, and one Expert per month) The minimal rule set is the absolute core of photography - kind of like when we used to use film and had someone else develop it for us. We got what we shot. Anyone should be able to turn out a very nice looking, non-pp'd shot, if they understand how to use their equipment. If you do not understand how to manipulate the color, contrast, etc in your own camera without resorting to using a software program after the fact, then learn! Open the user manual.
I wonder if some folks shy away or dislike Minimal simply because they tend to score a little lower?(the heavily pp'd eye candy doesn't come through) I know it's not the case in this Tree challenge, but on the other hand, the subject matter is universal - even if you live in a major metropolis.

+1 Every shot I took just looks so wishy washy and bland without being able to do anything with the contrast. |
You could do that changing the settings on camera :) |
There are many really magnificent images in the minimal editing challenge. Some photographers have remembered how to use their camera settings to capture wonderful light, objects and colors with really great contrast and dynamic range. I found it very refreshing to see the clarity and sharpness presented. It's important to remember the basics of good photography. We ALL tend to fall into the trap of thinking we can "fix it later in Photoshop". |
