The Oakland Athletics will only spend one day alone in first place in the AL West -- fortunately it's the last day of the season. (Tex: 5 | Oak 12)

I'm just hoping these kids stay too young and stupid to realize what they're doing for a few more weeks ... if the (ahem) Yankees happen to lose tonight, the A's will be the #1 seed.

It's more like lack-of-money ball ... a few other notes ...

-only four other teams have been as much as 13 games behind at any point in the season and come back to win a league or division pennant (A's were 13 GB on June 30)

-NO team has ever come back from five games behind with nine games left to play to win a pennant

-the current starting rotation consists of five rookies -- I think the last thirteen games were started by rookies

-that kid striking out Josh Hamilton (43 HR) with a 96-mph fastball in the eighth-inning setup role was, last year, a minor-league first-baseman with a blown-out knee

-last night's game to tie for the lead was started by (W: Blackley) and ended by (S: Balfour) a couple of guys from Australia

-most dangerous hitter is a rookie, a defector from Cuba

Amazing story -- as a long time A's fan surrounded by Giants fans(friends and family) it feels good to get back to the playoffs. Lot's of kids on this team...

Sounds a lot like Miami in the 80's...

ETA: Who am I kidding, it still sounds like Miami. :)

Fascinating analysis though... Thanks, I think that's pretty darn cool.

That was a fun day, I just got back from the park (with a stop to watch the presidential debate) and watching the Rangers come back to the dugout from the fourth inning on it was clear that the rangers were beaten (We were on the first base side). The A's are playing fast and loose: beware all those who stand in their path.
