You can see what I've already changed (sharpened, hue/saturation, levels) in this photo by clicking the before, and the after links. I just want to know if I am doing anything right or if there is something that I should change or work on. Any suggestions or comments would be helpful.

Andrea, I think you are on the right track with trying to separate the bud from the background and bring out the colors. the partial desaturation of the greens works well, IMO.
The sharpening seems harsh, though, so you may want to reduce the amount. If you're using the unsharp mask tool, try applying it with radius = 0.4px, amount = 50% and repeat a couple times.
Increasing the contrast is also a vey good idea on this shot, however watch your highlights, they are getting overexposed. BTW, I like your composition on this shot. When you compose a shot like this, even tho the background is out of focus, watch it carefully, sometimes a small change in camera position can significantly improve a background.

Ditto what kirbic said. Plus, another thing to try would be to select the background and then use levels to darken it. Then reselect it and apply a little gaussian blur to it. Darkening and blurring the background will help the foreground to stand out.
