Always here the peopl over teh pond talking about BH for camera equiptment - todasy i checked it out.

I am looking for the 105mmSigma Macro f2.8 EX and it's 260 quid in the UK from good old Jessops.

However, I can get it from www.bhphotovideo.com with shipping for 220 pounds.

Also applies to most other lenses.

So next time you want to buy something - try BH

Absolutely! Jon's example of Sigma equipment isn't the best, because Sigma are very kind in setting similar prices between the UK and US in real terms..

Jessops: Canon EOS 300D body only: £749.00

B&H NY: Canon EOS 300D body only $799.95 => approx £500

Obviously with a camera you have to watch out for foreign plugs, but for lenses, etc, ordering abroad is perfect. Just watch out for 20.5% import duty (less will be charged on a digital camera).

What about warranties?
Are they valid if shipped from US?
What about returns if damaged in shipping? Any experience?

Cheers!

A lot of more expensive B&H products can be bought in two flavours "USA" and "Imported". USA is generally $10 more, but offers international warranty. Imported doesn't.

I emailed Canon about this a while ago, when I was considering getting my 300D from the US. Apparently they can deal with warranties for international purchases, but it's at the discretion of the actual repair centre.

Never had any problems.

One thing to bear in mind - I recently sent my 300D back to Canon. It would have taken 5 weeks minimum to fix had I not bought it from Dixons, who have a priority warranty agreement with Canon.

In the end I was too worried about ordering it abroad because of a few people having problems.. Turned out to be a good thing, because I use my 300D very heavily - hence I wore out the shutter and it needs repairing.. Also they knocked the price down and offset it with extended warranty, which I may also be glad of yet.. :-)

However, I'm eying up a 20D, which will certainly be from B&H..

Does this include the VAT which will be added by UK customs.

I intend getting my Canon, either 10D or 20D from B&H, in November.

Neighbour goes over from UK 2 or 3 times a year and gets items delivered to Florida from B&H. Eeven if there is a problem and no warranty, the £800 I save will cover the repairs.

I can get a complete outfit for $2,500...over here that works out to £1385, can't even buy the body for that in the UK.

Even European prices are as bad...same outfit in Germany would cost 2500 Euros, £1800. It is almost worth flying to New York for a long weekend, £200 flight, Camera gear £1400 and hotels & food £300. Still $500 cheaper than UK price.

Oh, forget that, wife would want to spend loads in the shops!

This has to be the best option.
It makes me mad when i think about what we in the UK have to pay for our gear.

Yep, marbo...best I can see.

I can't afford UK prices. Neighbour & wife bring it back as hand luggage.

Remember, if you do this, don't bring receipts and manuals with you, mail them home before you leave. Customs look for proof of purchase when you go thru!

Import duty and VAT will kill your deal. Also, if buying from Ebay, check out Hong Kong Sellers as they say there are no charges....wrong, small print states there maybe additional duty and VAT to pay.
