		| | I'm at _IMG_9999 and now my camera is adding _1, _2 etc to it. It's probably somewhere in the manual, but does anyone here know how I can start again with _IMG_0001? (Canon talk here) |

		| | H'm, I was too quick with my answer. The number was OK on my camera, but I was still getting the numbers as in my first post in this thread. Found the solution today. It was the download software (EOS utility) that gave the files the wrong numbers. I put the counter back to 1 (an option somewhere) and now I'm getting descent numbers again. Hope this is helpful for someone. |

		| | EOS Utility?? How quaint! ;-)
Glad you got that sorted out! I've never used EOS Utility for transfer, so I would have never guessed that it would do re-naming.

With my Canon, if you look deep into the EXIF you'll see that the counter has more digits which just don't show in the normal display, but which provide each image with an individual "serial number" even though multiple files may have the same name.

In this example, the "107" shows that the image counter has been reset six times (I think it starts as "101"), so this was shutter-actuation 72,108 ...

Where can I see the EXIF details? I looked Canon Digital Professional Info but does not show any element called "Image Number". I tried couple of third party apps but no luck.

I use IrfanView, an excellent (free) photo browser, which is also good for "light" (simple) editing; I also use it when I'm going to batch-process some images (e.g. resize and change from JPEG to TIFF).

CTRL-e should show the EXIF of an original JPEG image (don't know if it supports RAW).

Also, I think the newest version of Windows show the EXIF as part of the File Properties (maybe a separate button for "extra" or detailed info?).

		| | it seems like I am able to see the Image number in the IrfanView application but it shows 0 may be because I downloaded as RAW and then use DPP to convert to JPG. I will try next with just as JPG shot and see what I get in image number. |

		| | I found this and it worked and showed me the count! I have about 37K actuations on my camera as of today. though the other method mentioned in previous post didn't work for me for some reason. |

Glad you found something! You still might try shooting RAW+JPEG and see whether any of the other methods work with the "native" JPEG file.
