I don't have a picture at this moment to illustrate my point, but will get one later.

Suffice to say, I bought a canvas through CafePress on one of their $45 deals for a 16x20 canvas. 8 months after purchasing, the canvas is actually sagging a bit off the stretcher. Noticeably. I don't know if there is any warranty, but I'll be letting them know I'm not happy. Maybe they'll do something about it, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

On the other hand, I have some 4-year-old CanvasOnDemand canvases that still look as good and tight as the day they arrived.

Sigh...

unbelievable!

Just to find out how CanvasOnDemand would handle this, I called their customer service and found out that not only do they offer a 1-year warranty, they also did this canvas! CafePress uses them as their canvas vendor. Consequently, my canvas is covered and they are sending out a replacement next week!

That is customer service at its best!

How are CanvasOnDemand's prices? I see nothing on their site. I've been meaning to get a couple made.

Find a groupon for them. They're really quite affordable. You can get 16x20's for 40-45 total cost. The groupon doesn't need to be from your home city. I got a big 20x30 with the groupon + a small additional cost (don't remember how much, but it was certainly reasonable).

Not sure how much I like that you had one crap out on you, Skip, but at least they are remedying the situation...

Any manufacturer can have a problem; it's how they respond when it's brought to their attention that separates the great from the good from the...

Not joking here. Remove the back dustcover. Spritz very lightly with water from the back. The canvas will tighten right up.

Here you go James :)
Use Code: LDAY30 | Sale Valid Until: Monday, September 3rd at Midnight (30% off)

It's actually a bit comical how once you are on their mailing list each week you get a different "Hurry!" discount offer ranging from 20-30% off. I wonder if they have ever sold a canvas print at full retail price? ;)

I have gotten a few canvas prints up to 24"X36" ($75 with a Groupon) and they turned out well.
One thing they don't say on their site is what method they use for printing to canvas; print directly to canvas or print to paper and than laminate to canvas. Does anybody know? The reason I ask is those are the two methods of printing to canvas being offered by Bay Photo who are also offering a 30% off sale until 9/13 (Promo Code 30CWRAP). I would prefer to use Bay as they have done an awesome job with many metal prints for me and being on the west coast like me their shipping gets to me fast. I am thinking COD does the "print directly to canvas" method, but wonder if they subsequently apply a protective UV laminate over that as Bay apparently does when doing this method?

This summer has been a series of sales, one following another. Last summer and autumn 2011, there were about two months without sale deals.

The current 30% off sale through Labor Day is a good one. I think it's only for the Pro accounts. (It's not hard to acquire a pro account.)

The Groupon stuff is for the retail side of CoD. The retail side's prices are higher to begin with.

Canvas on Demand is a great company and I didn't know Cafe Press used them for their canvases. I kept waiting for a COD Groupon when I could have just used one from Cafe Press - thanks for the info Skip!

I'd appreciate it if you used my Referal code if you are new to Groupon. :-)

And here's a Groupon from Canvas on Demand if anyone is interested - Available for 1 more day.

"Choose from Three Options"
$45 for a 16"x20"x1.5" gallery-wrapped canvas (a $126.95 value)
$52 for a 20âx24âx1.5â gallery-wrapped canvas (a $149.95 value)
$75 for a 24âx36âx1.5â gallery-wrapped canvas (a $202.95 value)

I just ordered a 24x36 Groupon and am going to make a canvas of my August Free Study :)

First time I've ever ordered a canvas... can't beat that Groupon deal - $75 shipped to my door. WOW.

Can't wait :)

Thanks for posting all this info.

BTW, does anyone know who Costco uses for their canvas? And has anyone used Costco before for this?

Kristin, I have 3 CanvasOnDemand canvases which I think turned out GREAT, and I think you'll love yours too! I did have a small one done by Costco, just to test their quality, and while there was nothing wrong with it, the texture of the canvas was smoother and the finish was a bit glossier than COD. I don't know who does the canvases for Costco but I prefer the look of the COD canvases.

Well, at those Groupon prices, it's even less than Costco... Glad to know.

Perfect timing Carole! I wanted to add to a couple images to a batch I am readying for a show and even had 24X36 and 20X24 in mind for sizes! Hoping they will let me buy one of each size...

When I click on your referral link though; it just takes me to the Groupon offers for my area. Maybe it does this because I am already a member and it found a cookie stating where I am? Maybe they don't offer referral credit for referring someone who has already used a Groupon before anyway? Is there an alternate way I can enter a code to give you referral credit then?

I think she only gets referral credits when someone new joins groupon.

Were you able to buy more than one size?

Can't buy until tonight since I left my credit card at home :P I'll report back though if I was able to get two sizes in one purchase.

That's correct Kristin.

Hey Brent - the Groupon says 1 per order but maybe you can do 2 separate orders, especially since you want to order 2 different sizes. Good luck with the show!

So... I was not able to buy two different sizes using the Groupon for Canvas On Demand. So I bought two 24X36 as the checkout gave me the option of selecting more than one of the same item. So I already know I can use the coupons I bought to apply toward any size I want and they will only charge me more if I go bigger than the 24X36 I paid for. So I can just go a little bigger than the 24X36 image I wanted to do but in the same aspect ratio. Big is good! :)

Thanks again for the heads up on the deal Carole :)

I'll add my voice praising Canvas on Demand.

I'll also echo hahn23: get yourself a pro account. Even I got one without any trouble.

Pro prices are 25% below retail, and then you often get sales on top of that.

Pro accounts also get access to their 2.5" "chunk" wrap, which looks terrific on the wall without a frame.

Another +1 from me. I actually screwed up on a file I sent them.....(Forgot to compensate for the wrap!)......and they redid it at no cost to me. They only asked that I destroy the one I ordered wrong.

Their quality is excellent as is their pricing.

Ok, I am finally going to try a canvas print. I got a groupon, now I have to choose the image. Do I have to do anything extra to allow for the wrap?

Yes, they typically use between 1-1/2 and 2-1/2 inches on each side -- add a border if you don't want to lose the edges. If you ask, all of the vendors will/should be able to tell you the exact size to make your picture.

As I understand it one advantage of printing to canvas is that you can usually get by with a 150dpi file (rather than the preferred 300dpi for prints) at the final print size, making it about 1/4 the size on disk.

How do I know if my file is ready for printing? I calibrate my monitor as much as possible but it's a 27" glossy iMac screen and I'm not sure if it's really right...

I just applied for an account... PLUS I am going to get an $84 voucher for a free canvas if I'm approved... wait for a sale and BAM, I've got another inexpensive, quality canvas. I can't wait :)
