Has anyone ever any cash from their digital photography?

Christ, the amount of mags I've sent images and enquiries to, unanswered, and I wonder what happens to my discs that I've sent with those large file images on; a frightening thought.

I got some pix in What Digital Camera magazine and sold the prizes and bought an A3 printer, then I got the bug and thought it was all going to snowball and I could make some sort of a living out of it...Hmmm.

I often blow up pictures for people for a fiver a go or repair their old pictures for a tenner, but that's about it.

Funny thing is, it doesn't really bother me. What means more to me are the great comments I get when showing my pictures to people. That REALLY makes my day!

Great comments aside, I hope some of you have made some hard cash with your stuff...?

Ive made enough to pay for my D60 on an inside job thru my brother, ( helps to have good contacts in the right places :) ) and had a picture published in Digital Photographer magazine ( readers gallery-no money ) I havent made any other money nor have I tried, but it was a good learning experience. Id settle with being able to pay for my photography habit to keep it self sufficient.

I made $140 selling note cards of my photos to friends for Christmas gifts in December. I sell them in packages of 10 with envelopes. I've given more note cards or photo prints away as gifts, than I've sold.

Lets see, I've done 2 weddings and tons of newspaper assignments. I've also done some weddings as second shooter for the pro. The 2 jobs I did, I was able to charge enough to pay for my Fuji S1 Pro!! And the newspaper job isn't bad at all. I've probably done about 25 assignments over the past 4 months, and at $25 a pop, not bad!

Know what your interested in and go for it. I find myself upset at times that I don't have the great eye for landscape or fashion or macro, etc. But my main focus is on weddings. And on free time, i try other disciplines.

Check out the 2003 photographers market for tons of photo opportunities to make money! But don't expect it overnight. A little each month to add to the equipment is perfect.

The question about making a living out of photography is dependent on your goals.

I work with dozens of photographers every week and most make a lot less than I would want to work for.

The best photographers I go to time and again for advertising jobs work fast, give me what I want without a lot of hands-on direction, have art and graphics backgrounds and have connections in the advertising industry so that if somethng screwy happens they don't need me to bail them out.

My company pays $150 an hour or $20 a photo used and has unlimited control over the images created.

The better photogs I work with earn about $40,000 a year but many earn about $25,000-$28,000.

My suggestion.....build a portfolio, get published at all costs (even if you have to give your first stuff away) learn the business, and have some god given talent.

I don't make a living out of it yet, but thanks to my girlfriend, I got a corporate client who bought one image for 100 and made xmas cards out of it for their clients 500 of them. One of those clients bought another image for 100
also her co-worker wanted a family portrait done she had 14 family members!! I shot 220 pics (thank God for digital) processed them at home and printed at home and sold $750 bucks worth. I have also sold a few landscape prints to her co-workers and one on daprints. Daprints is a ton of work with very little return for me but others may have better success there.
my homemade web site is www.rlarsen.com

Yup. Inquire with local magazines and newspapers. The smaller the better; They pay less, but they are a more tightly knit society; This means that they communicate with other small magazines, and before you know it, you are a freelancer for 3-4 small magazines.

add all that to your CV, and you are suddenly in the big league.

All it takes is patience, sharp elbows and persistence.

Hell - if I can make a living of photography, you most certainly should be able to.
