I just though I would share a short story about our summer project.

As you may know our summer project is creating a small sanctuary so to speak in our backyard for photographing local wildlife. We have quite a bit of work done and quite a bit more to go. We have plans for a water garden/pond to be added in the fall and etc.

We have worked to get the Hummingbird/Butterfly garden in and growing before the Texas heat killed it all.

Well it seems as we have talked here on DPC before about Hummingbirds and being very territorial when it comes to the nectar feeders.

Well It seems we have a young female Hummingbird that has decided to try and take over the entire garden and all four Hummingbird feeders during the day. She shows up about mid morning and stays around until sunset. She will perch up in the Bradford Pear tree and chase any other Hummingbird or Butterfly away if they even get close to the garden or feeders. It is so funny to watch her try and control the entire area.

Here are some of her hiding places:

She gets to enjoy all the plants we have provided:

When she leaves to chase one away others will slip in. I have been trying to get a shot of an adult male Hummingbird that has been showing up in the last couple days and she kept chasing him away. I finally managed to get a quick shot of him:

I have one Hummingbird feeder that is right adjacent to the patio. It is about ten feet from where I set to take photographs. She flew up and I was able to get this shot of her. It is like she is saying thanks! LOL

She is very curious and friendly. When we work in the garden area she will fly up and feed when she wants and hover all around us.

I was setting on the patio and a Monarch Butterfly flew in and landed on one of the feeders next to the pine tree and she chased it away before I could get a shot!

There are days when she either lets the others enjoy the feast, either that or she goes off elsewhere and they get to enjoy the garden. We are not quite sure which is true.

Here are a few shots of the plants we have in the garden:

Thanks for taking the time to enjoy our short story :)
Comments and suggestions are welcome as always.
