Bummer! I hope it gets righted. It was such a deserving shot.

Home is not so easily defined for many of us. My car is in Miami with my dad. My mail goes to my moms in Orlando. I spent a month sleeping in a tent in Haiti. My partner lives in LA, which is where I am currently but leaving very soon again to go to Nevada and then France. But my last true home that was really mine where I had a job, had an apartment, and wasn't relocating every few weeks, was Korea. And so by the challenge rules, I was in the right. My camera was set to my "home" time zone.

I agree with Robert, you should at least have a good shot of overturning this on appeal. Your situation is a little, er, unusual, but that should really have no bearing. What I'd do is communicate with the SC and tell them exactly what you just told us.

I replied to their DQ email, and the one about the 2 DQ penalties.

Is there somewhere else I should do that?

It seems to me, if they know this is a global community, and clearly I didn't shoot this in the future, that this should have been cleared with me before DQing. The rules DO say home time zone. My location on my profile says "The Earth" so it seems obvious clarification would have been needed as to where home is.

All of this stress and frustration could have been avoided.

My guess is that this will be fixed. Common sense says that the right thing to do is right this particular wrong.

Very interesting question... Do you mean to tell me they never even asked for any clarification on this?

Nope. I got on to check my computer and saw a DQ and was upset. Then I got more upset that I was so upset about a stupid virtual ribbon. Then I got even more upset when I realized that the rule that got me DQed is flawed and that I really didn't deserve the DQ.

And now I'm writing up a blog post on "rules" as a general concept. So... at least I got some inspiration to write out of all of this.

I think you are all missing the big picture here. Just 4 more DQ's ahead of me and I'm in the top 10!

Now who else has been traveling?

Hmmm... we ARE missing the big picture aren't we?

How could I have been so selfish... ;)

Well hopefully my attempt at humor made you smile, even if just for a moment.

To add a bit more humor: When the voting ended and the winners were announced, my birthday had just ended and I was in international waters with no idea WHAT time zone I was in. :P

If perchance one day I go to space one day... then?

Just want all my bases covered. ;)

I'm surprised they haven't come up with a GPS solution to this yet. Maybe it exists and you need the GPS add-on to get it(?). But it should be trivial to check your GPS coordinates and adjust the time zone on your camera automagically. Seems like a no-brainer feature.

My friend was looking into a GPS point and shoot so she could know exactly where and when each photo was taken. It was... RIDICULOUSLY expensive.

But that was a few years ago. Perhaps things have improved.

What's this applying common sense sense stuff everyone is talking about?

I recently bought a waterproof point & shoot specifically for shooting underwater video. It was about $300, and I'm sure most of the added cost above & beyond an average P&S was the waterproofing (good to 40 feet). FWIW, it is teh Olympus Tough TG-1.

I'm more concerned with this brouhaha over a gif ribbon.

You know it's not just about a gif ribbon. If that's all it is why are you here in the first place? Why does anyone submit to anything on this site? Why are there even rules if all it's just "brouhaha over a gif ribbon"?

You're being needlessly condescending because we disagreed in rant and I don't appreciate it.

+1 he just likes to stir the pot. I actually go to quite a bit of work occasionally just for those gif ribbons. Those ribbons really help push me to do my best most creative work. Without those silly little ribbons my photography would never have gotten so far so fast.

I'm actually a pretty good cook. I've worked in a kitchen when they were in a bind.

I wasn't even involved in the DQ, but here's what I see:
1. In your profile, you list your location as "The Earth"
2. On the photo, the location is listed as Florida
3. We have no choice but to believe that the photo is indeed taken in Florida, by you, and that therefore your camera should be set to the local time
4. If the date in the original EXIF is in "the future" then it is obvious that the date is set incorrectly
5. Given that the date is incorrect, we have no way of validating that it was actually taken within the allowed dates, and it is stated in the rules that we make no exceptions to this, because ...
6. ... people would be telling us all the time that "Oh, I keep my camera on Timbuktu time, I just happened to be in Omaha" or something similar.

Remember that this is just an unfortunate circumstance, and that nobody believes you were cheating, nor does it in any way detract from or diminish the opinion that others have of the photo. I've had shots I intended for challenge submissions, only to find that after a battery failure the clock had reset itself. Someone always forgets to reset their camera clock when Daylight-Saving Time changes.

Sorry about the DQ -- though I'm thinking that your image might itself be the most appropriate commentary on the whole situation . :-)

But General, if that's the case then the rule should say "local" time not "home" time. Local time I'm screwed. Home time I still have a chance to fight this. I can easily prove that I was living in Korea and that it was my last home. That's where I bought the darn camera in the first place. So no my date was not set incorrectly. It was kept at my home time.

The fact that I wasn't asked to clarify my home location makes me upset with the handling of this all. If it said Korea on my profile would I have at least had the benefit of a consultation before a DQ?

This isn't some "unfortunate but our hands are tied" situation because as was said, I followed the rules as they were written. Now it comes down to the judgement of the counsel, and as you said, you know I didn't cheat. It's not an exception to the rule.

This can be fixed.

Was the picture taken in Korea or Florida?

The camera was set to Korea. My "home". The picture was taken in Florida. Which is why it looks like it was shot in the future.

Do you really see that as being the important question?

As I see it, you guys almost appear to be attempting to ignore the previous advice given, and the very wording of the rule.

I don't see this as Monica trying to game the system, to me it seems a pretty simple case of her not listing her home zone correctly, being a smartass and using "The Earth" as her location. If you're looking for a reason to DQ, then I have no doubt you can cite at least three different rational reasons. If you're looking to be fair about things, I'm not really convinced a DQ is the "right" choice.

Why, exactly, do you think the location of the photograph matters? I'm honestly curious what line of logic you're following here. Since, in my mind, the real question is "Was this taken during the right timeframe? What does the evidence point to?" ...
