this is a standard cya list. i haven't read all the details, but from what i understand, this service pack is primarily geared at plugging security holes. you are free to take advantage of it or ignore it... |

fyi, from ms updates:
Available soon, Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) will bring users the latest security updates and innovations from Microsoft. It will establish stronger security settings that help defend against viruses, hackers, and worms and will provide unique new security features designed to make it easier for you to protect your PC.
Get Ready for SP2: Turn On Automatic Updates Today
The best way to ensure you get SP2 when it is released is by turning on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP. Visit the Protect Your PC site to let us turn it on for you or follow these manual steps—either way you'll get SP2 automatically as Microsoft releases it.
Turning on Automatic Updates today allows your PC to begin downloading important updates automatically, including the latest version of Windows Update. It also ensures you will receive future updates, such as SP2.

Given Microsoft's past history I would hardly take this as a CYA list.
I would take it as a very serious warning.
If it were me I would make certain that your automatic update is set for user approval before downloading and installing.

The key words though are "may" and "differently".
They're not saying that all those programs definitely WILL be affected, neither are they saying that they'll all stop working. I'm a great one for not trusting MS but even I find it hard to believe they'd release a service pack that broke all those programs - not least because half that list is taken up with their programs!!
As skiprow says, it's an ass-covering list - kind of like the list of "possible side effects" you get with drugs. Much like you don't believe that your hayfever pill will make your hair fall out, don't believe that SP2 will actually stop everything on that list from running.
(that said, I intend to install it on my laptop first and check that I can still work before updating my desktop!)

It is my understanding that it has not been released yet?
Did your Corporation get an advanced beta version for testing?

the most anticipated problems have to do with firewall configuration to allow server/file sharing applications proper channels through the new firewall. for all intents and purposes, it has no effect on stand alone applications accessing local data. |

It is released and available for download (250 MB). They say that the updates will be available via the regular windows update shortly. (Link is here: //www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/winxpsp2.mspx )
I've installed it and not had any problems. |

I installed SP2, and had to disable the MS firewall, as it kept disconnecting me from my dsl, no problem, I already had another firewall. Maybe the two didn't get along. |

I'm not into a "My chosen OS is better than yours" war but I would like to point out something that I found poignant regarding developers and why some programs may function differently after installing a Service Patch that is more secure.
Raymond Chen a Sr Microsoft Software Architect in his blog "The Old New Thing" (//weblogs.asp.net/oldnewthing/Rss.aspx) comments on poor design and development practices by C developers on the x86 platforms and how that as Windows has developed the culture has been to maintain backwards compatibility in memory modes and now that certain "holes" have been patched or closed, the developers who never learned the updated way to handle memory in Windows but who still made use of older, less secure memory allocations and calls may find that their programs cease to function or function poorly.
I'm not in a position to support or deny Chen's claims but its not like you can't take it up with him if you want to argue the inherent flaws in the Windows OS design over the years (or in the current Service Pack release). Honestly if you post something to his blog, I doubt he'd shy away from answering you in a forthright manner that may include a frank view of his opinion regarding design tradeoffs that have been made (which he or other senior programmers may not have liked) or he may point out how just about any other system has flaws, too. Regardless at least you'll find an informed audience who can carry on fairly involved discussion and a large portion of whom may at any point support your opinions of Windows.
Hope this resource helps.
Kev
