I'm moving on campus next week and I would really like to get an external harddrive to store my photos and such on so that I have space on my regular harddrive for programs and such. These 8mp (2.2-2.8 MB) files really eat up harddrive space and I don't want to have to worry about it with my laptop (even with 30 MB of space).
At home right now we have a Maxtor 3000LS (40 GB) and I've managed to eat up about eh, 20 or so just with my own files (photos, edits, songs, ect.) so I'd like to put my photos onto the extrnal storage right away instead of carrying them around and taking up space. I will back-up periodically, but I like to use my files at any given time and if I put them on CD and take them of my harddrive there's a big chance that I won't look at them again for months.
So, can anyone point me to a good quality, but cheap deal for storage? I've got limited funds, and if it can be available through Best Buy that'd be even better (I have about $20-30 on a gift card to pay for part). I've started researching but I can't find anything under $80 and I thought ours was less than that...so anyone?

12% off coupon for Staples can be used for harddrive purchase. There was a 10% off coupon for Best Buy but has since expired. I'll list again if it comes up.
Also another thing to think about is a DVD writer. They can be found as low as $50.00 for a 4x one. Blanks Dvds are getting cheaper too.

This is a great tip. Especially with the kids going back to school. I've played the rebate game several times and won through Office Depot and OfficeMax here in Miami. It's especially nice when the check shows up and you really need it yet weren't expeecting it ;)

You can buy 50 RiData (Riteks) at //www.newegg.com for only $24.99 now. That's 200gb of "it'll never crash" data.

It's the lowest price I could find at Best Buy ($139 for 120 GB)... And it seems like they're the only ones who sell it for that low, it's 169 everywhere else...
This is the one we have now: //www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?ref=over&product_code=303216&pfp=BROWSE

I normally archive my photos on DVDs. If taken care of, a burned DVD shouldn't deteriorate for at least a couple of decades and as your photo archive grows, you won't have to worry about running out of space. DVD burners are actually pretty cheap these days, $80 from Newegg. |

Yeah,. my suggestion would be to purchase an external enclosure and add a drive to it. Here's a whole list of enclosures.
//www.directron.com/externalhd.html
and.. I have purchased from this site before. Everything was perfect. |

Ooooh, that sounds like a good idea. Hm, I'll check into that. Mom and I are going out tomorrow to buy school supplies so I'll ask some questions in person too.
EDIT: Thanks faidoi for that coupon! It'll definately come in handy!

I recommend a DVD recordable drive instead. If someone stole your computer and hard drive you would lose any pictures you haven't backed up to DVD. For $1-$2 per 5 GB of data, you can have piece of mind that they're less likely to take those, and you can ship a copy home to store there too.
DVD+R and multiformat drives DVD+-R drives are really cheap these days!
I always shop at buy.com and amazon.com, one usually has the lowest prices around for a good store (I've bought a lot from both), but newegg is also good, and of course, with coupons, even staples can have deals that can't be beat!

Well, my laptop comes with a DVD/CDRW drive so I really don't feel like investing in a DVD writer when I will be backing up on CDs anyway. We'll see though. I like the EHDs because I can work directly off of them and not worry about having to copy over a file to my hard drive before I can. Who knows, it may be easier with my new laptop, but right now on this old desktop it's a pain.

Actually, if you use a program such as Nero's INCD, a DVD+/-RW can act just like a hard drive. |

See, this is why I asked here, all you guys know so much more about this kind of stuff than anyone in my family. I really doubt anyone except for my old computer teacher (and maybe my uncle) has even heard of Nero's INCD and my parents sure as heck haven't. ^^;; I realy do appreciate all of your help!

Here are a few sites in the States that offer good deals on a variety of items:
www.dealnews.com
www.dealsontheweb.com
www.dealcatcher.com
www.techbargains.com
I decided to get a USB 2.0 external hard drive and I am very happy that I did. I just feel much better, not only about my photos, but all of my data.
I also downloaded a free backup program from www.2BrightSparks.com called SynBack. It does a good job and has no "nagware". |

Thanks for your help everyone!
After doing some price comparisons at Best Buy, CompUSA, Staples, and Circuit City, my dad and I settled on a Western Digital 80 GB External Hard Drive for $70 at Circuit City.
He's big on saving money (and I don't blame him) so the $80 mail-in-rebate ($30 from Circuit City and $50 from Western Digital) sold him on it. We had considered getting the regular hard drive and putting it in a case, but with the rebate, it was cheaper to do this.
At the moment I'm copying over my files from this computer so I can take them to school with me and put them onto my laptop. ^_^
