Your source photograph may be old or new, as long as it was shot with a digital camera and not already entered in a challenge.

Is using Archive images something that has happened here before? IMHO this takes the 'challenge' out of shooting with a deadline.

We've done it a couple times before. It's rare. It makes sense in this challenge sense baby animals tend to have specific seasons...

I agree with you, but once in a while can be ok :)

It is very rare for challenges to not have a specific shooting timeline, but it has happened before. Specifically, the first Baby Animals challenge from August 2010 had the same rule set and lack of specific time constraints, as well as Hidden Gems challenge from May 2010.

The first Baby Animals had the same rule set. As for the challenge of shooting with a deadline....well, it might be 1) Pet is now no longer a baby 2) High difficulty finding a baby animal in the wild 3) High difficulty in finding a baby animal in captivity (remember zookeepers will keep the baby out of the public eye until they are old enough - unless they are very large like hippos or elephants).

I must admit I am pleased by this variant of the rules as I have taken some nice shots recently of some baby animals though I imagine if everyone can choose from their entire back catalogue there are going to be some fantastic entries.

The flag just means there are extra rules for the challenge. Click on any challenge with a flag and it will give you the details on what extra rules are applied to the challenge.

If nothing else this thread has helped a couple of people understand the rules when submitting so that's nice :)

Don't think I'll enter and looking forward to above average entries from all who do :)

Here's the deal:

New developments in RAW processing software and associated plug-ins has opened the door for better presentations of "older" images captured in RAW. While I really like DPC because it encourages me to go out and photograph fresh images, it's okay to occasionally look back and reprocess the digital "film negative" archived RAW images with new and improved software. Very interesting experience! Thanks, DPC!!!!

The only requirement is that it be taken directly with a digital camera, which pretty much makes it have to be within the last 20 years or so.

had a lot of fun with this, going back to one of the first times i tried to control DoF in camera with the little shoot i did.
it's amazing that i was able to find a good one in the bunch given my apparent crap-tacular photos from a few years back, and there's definitely no way i could've done anything in the PP department aside from "one step fix" and assume it was all okay at the time either.
I'm eager to see if i get any comments on this one as i'm VERY pleased with the result!

ok, I was about to enter this challenge, but the entering hoo ha still had that box to check that the photo had been taken withing the usual time frame, and not as specified in the flag listing. am I to understand that all 37 current entries were thusly recent, or that some entrants perjured themselves? is this a trap? do I qualify for paranoiaissimus?

I dunno about the date thing on entry, but having looked through my archives, apparently I've not taken too many shots of baby animals in the digital age.... :(

I submit that my entry was based on photograph(s) taken with a digital camera on or between Aug. 3rd 2012 and Aug. 9th 2012. If requested, I will provide the unedited, original file from my digital camera within 48 hours. I have followed the Advanced Editing rule set, taking into account any extra rules listed above.*

Extra Rules: Your source photograph may be old or new, as long as it was shot with a digital camera and not already entered in a challenge.

Actually, this is not ambiguous. Not a trap. Entrants have not perjured themselves. It is a case, however, of needing to keep original files of potential challenge entries... even if several years old.
