I figured out I need to use the export dialog to get a picture converted to jpeg but does anyone know if there is an equivalent to "optimize to file size" so I can save for DPC?

I do that manually by checking the "show preview" which calculates the resulting file size, and adjusting the quality value. If I'm not too happy I may open the advanced panel and uncheck the "save EXIF" (which may be substantial depending on camera model).

As mitalapo does, I use the "show preview" and adjust the quality slider to get the size I need.

BUT, as you've found jpegs need to be exported not saved, this means you are using GIMP 2.8.0, where the file size preview is broken on Windows (my main reason for not upgrading from 2.6) and displays the file size as 1.3GB

There is a plug-in //registry.gimp.org/node/33/ that in theory can be used. I don't know if it's compatible with 2.8.0

This is a bug that will be fixed in the next release (whenever that is). It worked fine in prior versions. For now you need to do 2-3 exports and check the size each time till it gets to near the 300k size. Yup it is a pain.

well thanks guys, the reason I ask is because I'm on vacation and I don't have PS on my work laptop, I was going to throw a shot in for the f/s but maybe I'll just try to see if I get home in time to enter it from my home pc.
