Hey, I've just started getting interested in photography, and so have been reading whatever I can get my hands on. So, I have a couple of (I hope not too stupid) questions for you guys.

I've read about model releases, and needing them if a picture is going to be used in any sort of promotional or advertising way. There are a couple of fine points that came to my mind about this, that I haven't found anybody mentioning yet. Maybe someone here can answer them for me.

The first one is, can someone sign a model release (as the parent or gaurdian) of their OWN child? You could sign it if someone ELSE took a picture of your child, but is there some "conflict of interest" or some such which would prevent you from signing as BOTH the photographer AND the parent on a model release? Sometimes laws are strange that way...

Secondly, is it conceivable that someone would need a model release for an animal? Like, if you took a picture of a neighbors dog, and Purina ended up using it for an ad campaign, would you need a release from the neighbor that owned the dog? Kind of like a child?

Anyway, just two little quirks that came to my mind when reading about model releases. Thanks for any pointers on them!

And great work here guys, I enjoy (and learn from) looking at your pictures! Thanks.

Rules may not be the same everywhere but I think in most cases you can sign a model relase for your children for images you shoot yourself and you dont need a model relase for a dog.
