Well, my new lenses arrived today; the 17mm f/4L TS-E and the 16-35mm f/2.8L are in the bag at last. I'm in a state of stunned satiety. That 17mm, especially, is just incredible... Gonna be a
learning curve, though...

Looking fwd to seeing some parallel lines soon.

I'm guessing that you would have killed for that 17mm when you were doing the architectural work years ago.

Those are some REALLY nice lenses, but I'm afraid that I'm too busy lusting after that new 24mm f/2.8 IS to be too jealous, besides that t/s lens looks like you need a engineering degree to operate it correctly.....

"oh wow" is right. I hope I can do it justice...

Nah, back then I had a REAL tilt/shift, a Sinar-P from Switzerland, the gold standard of view cameras. As for the engineering degree, it looks like the long-dormant expertise is fast resurfacing....

You've got quite the impressive collection there Bear.
Still, it's the man behind those lenses that make the fantastic images

went to that 17mm lens page here and well I don't think I have seen anything like this before!
Robert you have some catching up to do.

Have fun with the lens!

CONGRATS!

Been eyeing a TS for a LOOOOOONG time. Miss using my 4x5 arca swiss.

Have a ton of fun with them, sir. Looking forward to the images :-)

Congrats on the new acquisitions!
I hadn't realized the 17 had a protruding element. I've thought about the Nikon wide PC-E but it seems a bit wasteful to get it to use on my crop sensor, nor is it particularly wide.
Look forward to seeing the products from both!

Well, only 6 of us even own the lens, and before me only Christophe is active, so... As far as "catching up" goes, we don't live on the same planet, that's not gonna happen :-)

It's worth noting that even apart from the tilt/shift bells and whistles, this 17mm is the sharpest, purest ultrawide on the market in it's neutral orientation. I'm super-impressed with what I've seen so far. Ditto impressed on the 16-35mm, as well. It's SO bright in the viewfinder, it's so crisp and clean, I love it.

Ha-Ha, Robert, I somehow cannot believe that the 17 TS-E will be much of a learning curve for an old architectural guy like you! What a great piece of glass that is. Congrats, I know you will do it justice!

Here's an uncropped, uncorrected, full-sized JPG of the side elevation of our house, lens shifted down to show more foreground, hand-held image. Note how clean the horizontals are. View full-sized to appreciate quality of detail. I think I actually missed critical focus on the house; the bird feeder on the left is very sharp...

The 17, all that money, and it don't even zoom? That's a great piece of glass and machining art.
I have an old 35mm PC Nikkor. It's pretty cool but I don't use it very often.

Thanks. Pretty amazing. Sharp. Very little distortion! (I feel a wee bit odd commenting on that part though). Have fun!!!

This looks super sharp!

Is there anyway you can post another picture of the same place taken with the 16-35mm, and perspective corrected in photoshop?

I understand anything corrected optically will offer much better result as compared to a correction in post processing, just want to see how much difference it makes.

but more importantly, very nice haircut.

Quick test firing at a local church:

All may be viewed full-size, quality of JPG is on the low side to save space. 17mm TS-E vs 16-35mm f/2.8. All shot at f/8, TS-E shifted to remove foreground vs 16mm pointed up, followed by perspective-corrected (in CS6) 16mm, uncropped so you can see what happened. These are otherwise unprocessed, straight from RAW.

I just realized I didn't FOCUS the 16mm, I have the 5D2 set to rear-button focus and didn't do it. So those are a little soft.

And here's a viveza-plus-SEP2-luminance-processed version of the TSE shot...
