I'm getting ready to prep my photos for my county & state fairs. The state fair this year, wisely, rather than taking framed photos is now requiring that all photos are simply matted to 11"x14".

My question....typically, what is the preferred print area for an 11x14 mat? 8x10 gives 1.5" & 2" on the sides, 8x11 gives 1.5" all around, 7x10 is 2 inches all around. Is it preferred to have even matting all around, or uneven, using an 8x10?

Go look at the craft stores that sell frames with mats and see what and size pictures they accommodate.

The images in my house that have 8x10 are 11x14 frames with mats.

Stay away from uneven mat surrounds if you can. Settle on a size, either 1.5" or 2" on every side, and remain consistent throughout your presentation.

This thread would have an entirely different feeling if you took away just one "t" from the title.

When buying mattes, 11x14 frames are 8x10images. The actual opening is 1/2 " less on each side. I assume for the 1/4" border on paper.

If you're buying precut mats, the standard window for 11x14 is 8x10... and being standard, looks 'normal' - you don't really register the unevenness. Throw off the proportions more or shrink the mat and it starts to look funky, but you can probably do whatever you want for the window if you shop around or have a mat cutter. Our fair has us do a mat of 16x20 with an 11x14 opening. I usually go with the flow but am trying a square cropped photo this year, not sure how it will pan out.
