Help! Please?

I'm looking for a 24-105mm canon L series lens. I have $950.

I always buy from B&H, they're selling for 1149.

Amazon itself has it for $1000

But amazon has 5 featured sellers that are selling it for around $930.

Makes me a little nervous, because canon lenses/cameras usually seem to run around the same price most places.

Here's a link to the 5 stores -- does anyone have any experience with these? Would you buy from them?

featured sellers

Feedback greatly appreciated -- I've been coveting this lens for quite awhile, and I seem so close now...

I would buy from them. Just note, I haven't bought from any of them, but if they have 5 star ratings on Amazon you probably don't have to worry.

That's what I thought, too. 97% approval rating -- but my husband points out that means 1 in 30 is unhappy.

eta: Just make sure you read and understand their return policies. Most require you report defective/damaged items within 24 hours of receiving it.

B&H has the 'white box' for like 950. Might wanna take a look at that. No real difference between the 2.

Never heard of white box...

It says that it just doesn't include canon's box. Is it really the same lens? And older lens?

oops -- looks like the white box is a grey market item.

Wendy...I have never heard of those sellers before so I would be cautious. It might be better to spend a little more money to go with a known dealer.

That's the problem -- don't have the little more money...

No comment on these particular sellers, but just a quick comment about online satisfaction ratings. Scammers on e-bay have been known to sell hundreds or thousands of cheap items on the up-and-up to build a strong seller score. Then they switch gears and post something big that they don't have like a car or a motorcycle. The price point of around $1000 for a lens is probably not worth the trouble to setup something like that, so I doubt that is the case here, but I'm always wary of trusting seller scores for unknown sellers when the purchase is an expensive one for me.

My thinking is that these are Amazon partnered resellers (not ebay). So part of me is thinking that amazon has a reputation to uphold. That's why I'm considering it, even though it's making me quite nervous.

Now I understand the price difference -- "Brand new lens from a Canon 5D Mark III kit. Full Canon USA warranty. Authorized Canon dealer. "

For the peace of mind alone, I would wait the extra month or two to get it from a more reliable source. I can return to B&H no matter what in their allotted time. I give them the business because when they screw up they always fix it.

i m not saying these guys won't do it. I m just saying that to me, the peace of mind is worth the wait and money.

Ofcourse i m paranoid, and go to the extreme of buying the statistically useless accidental protection because of the one time i smashed my laptop by mistake and it was covered and it saved me a $1000... but yea

i believe most "white box" items are pulled from kits.

Hhas anyone ever bought a white box item? Do you still have a sull warranty and warranty card with it?

I had an issue with a seller on Amazon a couple months ago, essentially I was sold a used clock radio as new. Amazon too it back just like any other return.

Canon sells refurbished versions for $919, and you just missed a 20% off coupon and free shipping (however that particular model is out of stock at the moment). I've bought refurbished gear from Canon several times. It has always been indistinguishable from new and comes with a 90 day warranty. I'm currently waiting for the 17-40 f/4L to become available.

I've been watching the canon refurbished site for about 4 months, now, but I've only seen one come available once. I was hoping to get one before a vacation in August.

Checked out a couple of the sellers on Amazon. You can click on the seller, and details about the seller, to get the detailed ratings and reviews. Did not see anything that I would consider bad-bad-bad. Worst one was the filter shipped with the lens was the wrong size. For a couple hundred dollars I could wait for the exchange, or buy another filter.

I wouldn't buy from those sellers... way too much money is on the line.

When you buy the 5DMark3 with the 24-105, the price of the lens only comes out to 800$. So its posible these people may have bought the mark3 with the lens and didnt want it or like it and are just looking to sell it.

Wendy, I bought my 18-135 as a white box. The only difference is the box it comes in. Full warranty and everything. As others have said, they're just pulled from a kit.
