Oy! I'm still in the process of upgrading to Win7. If this is good through Jan 2013 as it says, perhaps I may wait....Thanks for passing it on.

I did talk to a beta tester of Win8 and he says its fantastic.

This is for the "Pro" version; what if you have Win 7 Ultimate (I do): is this in any way losing features for me?

What is Win 8 going to be able to do? What are the changes?

I really enjoy it, and now with the new Windows Phone 8 software being released and the Microsoft Surface tablet on the horizon I'm loving where Microsoft is taking all of this. The power of the normal Windows desktop is still there in for traditionalist and die hard Windows fans like myself, but having new tools to work with and display a lot of data, social networking, blogs, photog sites, news and weather all in one place is very appealing to me. For the upgrade price you can't go wrong. All great news in my book.

You may not be able to upgrade. At least, that was the case with going from Vista Ultimate to Win7 Pro. M$ has some very quirky upgrade policies.

I was looking into the work arounds with Win7...I'll wait on Win7 and Win8 until I hear about about them.

For me, I have software known to be incompatible with Win7 (and I'm sure Win8), so I need a working XP. The way the upgrades work, if you don't apply some tricks you lose XP.

That question was asked in the comments section and the answer was yes, you will be able to.

I don't understand. My question is, I have better-than-pro Win7, I have Win7 Ultimate. The upgrade is for a Win8 Pro. Is there a Win8 Ultimate? What do I miss by not getting it, if so?

So, it looks like M$ changed their upgrade paths (at least based on the web search). The first part of what I meant is that you may not have been eligible for an upgrade from Win7 Ultimate to Win8 Pro, this was the case (as I understand it) with previous versions.

I'll see what I can find from the person I know unless someone else can speak here first as to the Win8 differences and what you would "lose". Anything I could post is off the web search....

Robert, Microsoft announced in April that there will be three versions of Windows 8. Windows 8, Windows Pro, and Windows RT.

Windows 8 is the new version that all Windows 7 Basic and Windows 7 Home will upgrade to.

Windows Pro is the new version that users of Windows 7 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate will upgrade to.

Windows RT is the platform for ARM processor devices.

Windows 8 Pro will have ALL the features that both Windows 7 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate had including a media center add on. You will NOT be losing any features found currently in Windows 7 Ultimate.

There really aren't a lot of differences between Windows 7 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate with the exception of a couple things like Bitlocker which allows you to fully encrypt your entire hard drive and file encryption. A couple of other minor things, but for the most part Pro has always had what 99 percent of the heavy users needed.

Again, no need to be concerned because what ever you use or don't use in Ultimate now will still be there incorporated into the new Windows 8 Pro version. Even if it sounds like...by the product name that you are being "downgraded"....you're not.

Hope this clears things up. :)

We're getting ready to upgrade to Windows 7 at work. I've almost got the image done and ready to start pushing it out.

Cool Larry. My workplace sure has it's share of XP computers, but Windows 7 is available for anyone that request it as well. I work in telecommunications as a Centrex programmer etc. What industry do you work in if you don't mind me asking?

You know, they do it rarely, but it seems that Microsoft is setting up for a home run. It ought to shake up the electronic world when the giant rises from its slumber and hopefully only in a good way with competition. Apple is becoming the Microsoft of the 90s and it would be good to avoid a decade of monopolistic behavior.

I think I'll be an early adopter of Windows 8. Of course I may be able to get it for even less having family work for them, but $40 is a no-brainer, especially when they mentioned it worked smoothly on a 5-year-old Dell. That would indicate it may not be super sensitive to having cutting edge upgrades of RAM and video cards.

It works smoothly on a 5 year old dell now, but what about after SP1? Win7 worked great on my system too in beta, was faster than XP then after SP1 it was slower.

I ran the compatibility checker yesterday and everything checks out on 6 year old equipment. Some software is iffy, but that is to be expected this early. I'm more concerned about hardware....

When is the release date?

I'll be on the sidelines watching what the initial reports are. Unless I'm missing something, which is entirely possible, it doesn't look like there is a compelling reason to move from Win7. Now from XP, different story entirely.

Yeah....I agree. I'm still on XP (you knew that from a previous conversation we had) and WAS going to upgrade to Win7 using the student version. Just got the MV tax bill (thanks Connecticut) so I'll hold off especially in light of Win8.

Actually, I had heard this deal was coming for a while, but I didn't realize it was going to cover those still on XP. I emailed someone at work who tested out both Win7 and Win8 and they suggested going straight to Win8.
