Neither did I, until I saw your post. I was thinking quantities.
It looks like 100's & 1000's is a specific brand name that gets used as a generic term?

Yup. Maybe call that challenge "Candy Sprinkles" and have the 100's and 1000's mentioned in the description?

Any Australian instantly knows what 100s and 1000s refers to, (regardless of brand). It's been a minor enlightenment to find that this term is not so familiar to the rest of the world.

I know them as "sprinkles" here in Pennsylvania. |

+1 Most of N America knows them as candy sprinkles or similar, though as my parents are Brits I'm familiar with the term 100s of 1000s too. Probably because there are some damn many of them! *off to wiki it*
ETA Oh duh, Kelli beat me to it!!

Again?? People keep talking about fairy bread, and I'm so jealous that we don't have that tradition here. I hadn't even heard of it before DPC. (you learn so much on this site)

A treat I had growing up was white toast with butter and white sugar. Very similar, but not as special. My husband and I still have toast with butter and sugar for a nighttime snack occasionally. I'm going to try fairy bread instead. |

Hmmm...fairy bread...I have no idea what it is, but as it involves 100s of 1000s in an important role, I think I have some idea as to what it might be. Fairies are generally seen as light and ethereal, right? Which is why I think that fairy bread is essentially spongecake, with 100s of 1000s mixed in so they melt during baking and create little pockets of colour...just a wild guess, as I've seen small spongecakes (mostly tiny little cupcakes) riddled with colour.
Am I right, Aussies? Anywhere near close?
ETA: juliboc...my sweet-loving mum has told me how much she enjoyed 'sugar sandwiches' during WWII, so I can just imagine what they're like!

wiki:
Fairy bread is sliced white bread cut into triangles or squares, spread with margarine or butter, and covered with hundreds-and-thousands or nonpareils which stick to the spread.
Fairy bread is commonly served at children's parties in New Zealand and Australia.
The origin of the term is not known, but it may come from the poem 'Fairy Bread' in Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses, published in 1885.

Me too, but we mix the sugar with cinnamon. We called it super toast. ;D |

One of the fond memories of growing up in the '70s and watching BBC comedies like °Dad's Army° (1968-1977), where young Pike, in one episode, gets his sweets ration in 100s and 1000s - because "there are more of them". Of course, during the course of the episode, the little paper bag they're in gets knocked out of his hand and they go all over the place... ;-Þ |

I MUST POINT OUT THAT 100'S AND 100'S PURCHASED IN AUSTRALIA IS DIFFERENT FROM THE SAME BOUGHT IN THE US.
THE AUSTRALIAN VERSION IS EASIER TO CHEW THAN THE US VERSION, NOT SO HARD ON THE TEETH, BUT STILL FIRM.
