After hanging up on yet another robo-caller this evening, I enlist the evil geniuses of DPC.
Yes, I know you're here.
Is there any way to make life even slightly inconvenient for them? This is only the beginning... |

Ohhhh, Alice, would that I had the answer to that one! We have been set upon by them, and they all seem to have the excuse that they are a charity, are calling in relation to a political campaign or otherwise have legitimate business with us.

If there is a pause when I pick up the phone, I just hang up. You wanna talk to me, get a person. |

Just forward the call back to the company or candidate. ;)

I do the same thing but it is still very annoying, especially if I've rushed to get the phone. :-(
Neil, do you have to have call forwarding as part of your phone package? |

Sure, I have skype-in for my primary home office phone (or whatever they're calling it). But I can't selectively forward...I'd have to set forwarding to them and then reject the call. And then make sure I didn't miss anyone elses call.
But I was just being evil. :)
I used to do the same thing as Johanna ... if they don't talk right away, I hang up.
But there's a better way...just use call screening for everything.

Yes. All this is good. Except that I broke one phone a while back by hanging up too (ah) briskly.
I am still hoping for some way to make it even the slightest bit inconvenient for the robo-caller mastermind.
Call forwarding is a very good idea, but I don't have that service, dang it. |

I get strange robo calls from a spanish speaking robo. I have no idea what they are saying but it is the same every time and it sounds really urgent. I am really annoyed because if I could figure out who they were maybe I could track the company down sometime and threaten them I really want them to stop calling me. I hope you get an answer to this question. Also if anyone else gets those Spanish messages and actually speaks Spanish could you please tell me what they are saying (just out of curiosity) |

First thing, say "Hello" only once, if it's someone you know, they will hear you and talk. If it's a robo caller, they don't hear the first hello, silence, hang up. Simple as that. |

...but not very gratifying after you've leapt off the john and tripped over a washbasket, trying to reach the phone in time. |

They are probably trying to employ Rosie the riveter.
Just so you know, we get exactly the same over here, it's a real pain. |

If you need to know what they say in Spanish, record that call and send it to me. I will translate :)
Ps. I only have mobile phones in my house and they never call then, at least in Italy. |

That's a sweet one, all right.
But skewsme's correct. It would be nice to be able to annoy the robo-caller mastermind just a little,
instead of putting up with the inconvenience of answering the call of their little robots. |

Find the real number of the organization making the phone call, be it "Greedy rich bastards for Romney" or "Socialist Pigs for Obama" and call them. Tell them you are so offended by the rudeness of their tactics that, while once in favor of their candidate/issue/petition, now you are reconsidering since if they value your vote so little that they have to resort to such tactics, so moving forward, you really are going to have a hard time supporting them. |

This is cool. I can't stand our crooked governor or his policies. I'm so annoyed that he is spending taxpayers' money to sue the Fed. Gov. over the voter purge injunction.
Didn't mean to hijack the thread. Back on topic, this is an interesting facility to robocall the robocaller.
And I have resorted to screening all my calls. If I hear someone leaving a message, that isn't prerecorded, then I pick up and apologize for not getting to the phone quickly enough.

I just turned my ringer off for all but a few numbers and then I check messages/missed calls. My phone is for my convenience, not that of some political A-hole. |

I never go out of my way to answer the phone.
All my friends know my house has an open door policy and the chances of getting me on the phone are slim to none. If they leave a message, I'll get back to them the next time I'm around the phone, so roughly every 20 minutes while there's beer in the fridge. I should probably get a cell phone in the future and get rid of the land line, but I really want to resist that urge.
Right now I enjoy mowing people over who insist on texting while walking without looking up. Don't want to join their ranks anytime soon.

You might want to google that phone number. Often, there will be a lot of discussion online about the number, what is being said, the nature of the 'scam', etc.
I also hang up quickly if there is any delay. The dialer is listening for a real person and once it hears a real voice (as opposed to an answering machine), it routes the call to a rep who gets the call along with a pop up telling him who the machine thinks might be on the line. Those systems are fast, but that couple of seconds' delay is your a that they are using a dialer and an opportunity to hang up before dealing with a real person.

It's fun wasting their time, though.
As Marbo said, one way to do it is to ask them to hold for a moment, and just never come back.
The other thing that's fun is to say: "I'm so glad you called -- I'm having the worst day!!! I just went to the doctor, and he told me I have hemorrhoids!! Can you believe it? How embarrassing is that?? And when I go to the pharmacy to pick up the medication, everyone will know what it's for! I'll just want to sink through the floor! Then my sister called, and she is pissed at my mom, because she thinks she's spoiling her kids -- Well, she is spoiling her kids! But will she listen to me? No! But when Jenny threw a whole roll of toilet paper in the toilet, and clogged the plumbing so bad that it flooded the downstairs apartment, she really should have figured it out right then and there! And then there's ..."
And see how long you can go on before they hang up. :)

Coincidentally, I happen to work in that industry or just switched/installed whatever your're trying to sell. Why, yes, I AM in marketing, no, I DON'T have a mortgage, and my three Rottweilers are all the home security I need, thank you. I donated to your competitor last week and Rachel from cardholder services must have the wrong number. I am staunchly opposed to whichever political party you're with, don't read the newspaper and haven't seen a movie since E.T., but since I have you on the phone in violation of a do-not-call list, I'd like to tell you about some fantastic Amway products... |
