I had not realized that it had been so sooooooooooooooooooooo long since I had done a basic challenge. lol, when did RAW become outlawed??? Anyways, can you use dodge and burn anymore in basic???
06/09/2012 12:24:13 AM · #2
Seriously? No, you never could do dodge and burn in Basic. The only spot editing is to remove sensor dust.

Raw can be used in Basic, but not in minimal. No dodge and burn.

I am so not entering that photo I just did then LOL Back to the drawing board!

Thanks Neil, I have to say I did read the rules and I swear about 4897603485605986 years ago you could do that,. OR in my wildest imagination I tried to will dodge and burn into the ruleset and just didn't believe it when I couldn't find it

Is it really only JPEG as well??? Luckily, I totally mis-read the descriptions and thought that it was minimal , so stuck it on JPEG . so phew got that one covered totally by my dumb blonde luck

I am a dork =\.

That is weird then cus it says "

Your submission must be:

taken with a digital camera that records EXIF data.

Submission has to be jpeg, not original capture.

So has to be JPEG, even though you stated it could be in RAW?

It doesn't matter, I did it in JPEG as I thought it was Minimal challenge (must have just dreamED that one up in my head at some point lol)), then saw Basics and went bananas on the dodge and burn lol

I have pre- disqualifiedeted myself even before the challenge started LOLOL

yay for you guys for winning the "Lets not get Juliet disqualified" award.

I could make a badge now for that!!!!!!!!!!! OOOOOOOOOhhh the things I can do with badges! lol

When you shoot in raw, you have to convert the raw file into a jpeg file. You have to convert the raw file anyway if you want to edit it at all in photoshop (not just the photoshop raw applet).

Just to be clear...

In Basic and Advanced, you can shoot RAW or JPEG.

RAW has an advantage for DPC...it's not as easy to mess up your original. If you shoot JPEG, and it gets touched and marked by file transfer or editing software, it becomes invalid as an original.

If you prefer to work in JPEG, one option is to shoot RAW+JPEG, or just make sure you make backups of all your JPEGS from your memory card or at least before being touched by transfer software.

Other than that, once it's shot, the thing to remember with Basic is no spot editing, other than to remove sensor dust. Not dust from the scene. Sensor dust. And watch out for software or actions that do things like vignette. And no layers except adjustment layers when editing. yada yada yada. That's a summary from memory. Read the rules. If it contradicts anything I just said, listen to it :)

For advanced, those restrictions are removed. But there are others...see the ruleset ;)

Minimal is much more restrictive, you can only shoot JPEG. No cropping, brightness, contrast, etc. See the rules.

(I only said "Seriously" because I wasn't sure if the post involved sarcasm.)

The bolded part is not legal: all layers must be in "normal" mode in basic editing.

While we are on the subject of what we can and can't do...we can clone out dust, etc, but cannot use the healing brush in Advanced, correct?

No, healing brush is fine in advanced. As long as you're not obliterating something major. It's the best way of dealing with dust spots, stray twigs, unsightly wires, etc.
