Hello everyone! I am currently weighing the pros and cons on selling my Rebel. My parents got it for me for christmas and i feel really guilty that they spent so much money because I dont use it very much and when i do i usually use the automatic settings because thats all i know how to do. so i was thinking any money i could make off of it can go towards college next fall (eh, every little bit helps). i just dont know if i'll later regret getting rid of it. (i also have a canon power shot that i recently got for snapshots and stuff, and i have the film rebel). so...any opinions on this? |

If your parents were happy to buy this gift for you (and didn't do so reluctantly after much concerted begging) then I'd make sure they know how much you really appreciate their generosity and keep the camera.
You'd be lucky to recoup as much of the original costs as you hoped which would kind of waste that margin of difference.
If they bought it despite financial reservations only because you begged and begged then perhaps you may want to consider your options and at least find out what you could get for it.

If you are not going to "use" it for a year or two, then cashing-out now makes some sense, since you have a backup camera for your current needs, and the same money should buy a better camera in two years when you're more ready to fully utilize it.
But, I'd maybe give your parents right of first refusal to buy it back, or just keep it if they'd have any "problem" with your selling a present ... no amount of money is worth starting that argument! |

I think I agree with GeneralE that consideration of your parents is the first thing to think about. Maybe mention that you don't use it very much and ask them if they think the money would be better spent on college.
Regarding your enjoyment of photography - you don't need to save and get a Mac, or go 100% digital, or do anything on someone's suggestion. Go with the flow, do what you enjoy, and buy equipment YOU want and YOU will use. |
