After reading the rules and asking some members, I'm still confused on converting to B&W in terms of the minimal rule set. The rules states:
you may fully desaturate your image using your editing software’s “desaturate,” “convert to grayscale” or equivalent function. Customizable tools are not allowed.

In Aperture, is it safe to assumed I can slide Enhance -> Saturation -> "All the way to the left" to create my B&W? How would I go about doing this otherwise to say within the rules?

As someone who's always bitching about the lack of minimal, I'd really hate not to enter because of this oversight.

yes, you just cant selectively desaturate one or two colors, you have to desaturate them all.

yeah, i don't think a B&W filter would qualify since it's a filter, but going into the color/saturation and either selecting a "monochrome/greyscale" option or sliding the saturation all the way 'off' are perfectly valid options.

What about in PSCS4? You can not use layers for any purpose. So how do you convert to BW without a layer?

If you guys can't tell my PS skills are akin to hunting and pecking. I just mess with layers and sliders until it looks good.

Either of these menu commands will work:
â€Â˘ Image > Mode > Grayscale
â€Â˘ Image > Adjust > Desaturate

Thanks a lot.

I keep telling myself I'm gonna start studying PS more but between family, work, and summer activities I barely have enough time to shoot. Learn as you go I guess.

Don't forget that most cameras these days have a B&W mode. You can even shoot in RAW + JPEG and use built-in or physical color filters to adjust B&W tones for a dark sky or leaves that pop and still have access to the full color RAW original.

why don't you use something like lightroom instead them. its much more user friendly for casual edits than photoshop is.

I have heard that from several people. I am going to do just that when I get a few extra bucks in my pocket.
