Any drawbacks? I mean I don't want to have the thing blow up in my face when I go to check on it.

Li-ion battery. It doesn't have a memory effect, and the charger won't overheat if you leave it on for a few days.

The only problem is when you see the electricity bill :P

Ni-MH batteries also don't have the Memory effect.

Ni-Cad bateries do, though. If they're Ni-Cad, keep using them until they're dead, THEN recharge 'em.
