I am visiting my in-laws and went to show them the following picture and I couldn't believe how poor the image quality was. On their monitor it looks horrible...

Will you all please take a look at the original and tell me if it looks okay?

Thanks!

good to me too ... perhaps they had the browser set to automatically compress image files for quicker loading.

To how many colors (in numbers or in bits) was their monitor set?
At 16-bits a lot of photos look like crap (this is about how the monitor is set, not the bit-depth of the photo itself -just to keep it clear-).

What exactly was the problem?

It looks good on mine.

Or perhaps set to 8-bit colour, or worse? Horrible in what way exactly? Looks fine to me.

PS. I'm certain there are people who will view this site in low colour resolutions - inevitably. ever wonder what they must thing all the fuss is about?

Make sure they don't have some sort of "download accelerator" installed. These things re-compress images without regard for image quality in an attempt to make things load faster. Blah.
