No, the worst that can happen is that the property will be owned by some nut with a gun ... the second-worst that the owner will have already called the police by the time they inform you that they plan to have you removed and detained -- even if you can convince a judge to release you without bail you'll probably end up missing lunch ... :-( |
I guess I have never trespassed on anybodies personal individual property. Just business properties and such.
Also, I am from Davis California which is extremely liberal and friendly. So it does depend on where you live. I wouldn't trespass so freely in other places. |
the other worse thing is that somebody gets hurt. maybe a slip and fall, a cut, whatever. sorry for sounding like an old fart, but businesses get sued for people getting hurt on their property; that's why they don't like people being in places they shouldn't be.
and when you post your photos, it makes other people want to go do the same thing. it's all in good fun, until...someone gets hurt. or arrested. or, as paul pointed out, shot.
you might not get every shot you want, but you can get a lot further asking for permission than forgiveness... |

So? Do you think companies or the government don't pursue trespassing charges?
As GeneralE pointed out, trespassing is just a bad idea.
Ask NikonJeb about his experience getting busted, how much it cost him in time, money etc.
From an earlier thread:
Originally posted by NikonJeb: I have trespassed and gone places with permission. I am on a year's probation, doing 40 hours of community service, and have spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $6K USD in fines and legal costs for my curiosity and fascination for abandoned buildings. That little foray was completely harmless, but since it was state property I was processed through the system and charged with felony burglary and felony criminal trespass. I no longer go on, or into anybody's land or buildings without permission. My cahrges were reduced to misdemeanors, and my record will be expunged because of a program I was admitted into, as long as I keep my nose clean for the year, but I have been served up a lesson the hard way. Do your research for the owners, and think long and hard before you go somewhere without permission.
Forgiveness can be easier to get than permission, but there's no guarantee you'll get it |

From my own experiences, people are usually less worried about what you'll do with the resulting images, and more about their property getting damaged and you getting hurt and suing them. So plan ahead - if you're going into an old barn with fallen timbers, you'd be a fool to wear casual footwear. They won't be any protection at all if you step on a huge old nail poking out of a board. Enter realizing that you are doing so at your own risk. Dress to get dirty, too, and always respect No Trespassing/Private Property/Keep Out signs. I live out in the country and whenever I see an old barn or outbuildings it's usually adjacent to property that is clearly occupied. If someone's home I ask them about the property and go from there. |

I don't necessarily agree with this:

But I do agree with this:

And YIKES! to this:

Where was this - Area 51??? Seems like overzealous prosecution by the state. |

You could always look at other photographer's portfolios in your area and try to discern where they shoot the photos you like.

Yup. Also, some further suggestions can be found in this recent Strobist post.
ETA: I forgot to mention that this tool is BOMBER for thinking about how the natural light will be.

Sorry for being off topic but CS, running 100 miles a week wont be good for you! Am pretty sure that even seasoned marathon runners won't do that distance in a week and you say you cycle as well? |

There are a lot of public parks around Mike. Cooper river (Pennsauken) has some really nice scenery, a white foot bridge, sailboats, etc. There are the wooded trails with lakes, streams & river in Cherry Hill on Park Blvd. There are even some cool foot bridges and staircases. At the end of Park, coming out onto Brace Rd is a big gazebo, usually with plenty of flowers. I had a whole in list my head, and just kind of blanked, it's been a long day. I'll come back and add more later. |

Check out Park BLvd too. It's fairly close to Cooper River and really so many places within there to shoot. |

It goes from Grove St. (Grove is what Haddonfield Rd is called after you cross over Rt. 70) to Brace Rd. It's all park land. There are trails through the trees, bridges to cross the streams, the big stairs go from the area with the dam up to the roadway. I have a number of challenge entries from this area. |

some test shots to see how the light would be hitting my subjects and how backgrounds would turn out. all natural light no reflectors. it was kind of overcast too so that helped.

Those are great! It really is a huge area, how many different bridges did you find? Did you find the little lake? |

i found 3 bridges, the one in the last picture is the best one i found. I made the mistake of parking by brace rd once my daughter saw the playground, she lost all focus and bugged me the whole time to go back.

I think there are 7 or 8 in that stretch. I usually park two blocks down from where you parked (there's a big parking area), go into the woods and follow it all the way around. The trails start way back further though right off of Grove St. There might even be some more bridges that way. |

i drove down to there, by the baseball field and walked back, it was getting late and the ground was muddy so we turned around and went home. i'll need to go further back another night. goo too know there is lots more back there.
