I love expert and advanced editing but minimal can be challenging that's why I want to enter this one. We never work with on camera settings and now we can do it :) |

Oh no, my Tokina is having focus issues, I'll have to use live view. I tried for the last minimal challenge but could't get anything decent, I'll give it another go. |

Oh I agree and I will happily enter Basic editing, I just think the Minimal is a bit too restrictive - plus images from the 5D3 are very soft from camera and require sharpening in DPP to make them usably sharp, I might mess around with some settings and try and get results ok from camera but as I would rarely if ever use it again I don't see it's really worth the effort ;)

Set it for hyperfocal and leave it alone? I manually set my 12-24mm to hyperfocal at f8 and never touch it. |

I managed to tweak the picture control settings on my D300 to get the kind of look I like for B&W. I was quite successful in the last minimal editing challenge (PS Terms) using in camera B&W. |

i love the minimal editing challenges... it makes you think more about the shot and not what you can do to make it do in post. the photoshop terms challenge was one of my favourite challenges, really made me consider all aspects of the shot. |

Cruel joke.
Why couldn't we have used minimal on one of the boring topics we had lately. Maybe I'll enter but I just lost excitement for this. |

Sorry for the spelling, on the phone today, like most days.
There is only a minimal challenge every blue moon, I don't see the problem, it's not as if it's every week, most shots in this will look pretty bland, the voters understand. I might not be able to enter because of time constraints.

i wonder how many other challenges i could recommend that TPTB can ruin with minimal editing. |

It's funny, because I think the exact same thing about expert editing.

Hooray! My call for a In The Style Of Stephen Shore challenge has been answered.
Seriously though, it is an odd choice for a minimal edit challenge- minimal tend to be better for street type stuff really- People may struggle with grand skies etc. No worries though as i'm getting into a far more minimal approach to urban landscape these days anyway and this is perfect for that. Recent stuff like and which are near enough minimal anyway. I'll score badly i'm sure though. I like bland.
I generally love Minimal and my preference would be it alternating with Expert every other week with everything else Advanced. Do away with Basic altogether as it's kind of pointless i think. |

I feel the same about minimal though it's pointless, does anyone actually believe that in days gone past the masters didn't edit their images? Of course they did - I don't believe it improves anyones photography skills I just see it takes an image and shows it in a seriously inferior way to that which it could be displayed.

I'd say this sums it up pretty much lol ;)
I agree with you though that this seems a weird choice for the minimal ruleset and had it been used in a street photography or similar challenge I might well have been tempted out of my comfort zone, can't please all the people all the time though and as I said previously for those that like the ruleset it is definitely well overdue.

Nah, i don't believe that at all. I'm fully behind the idea that processing and manipulation has been present from the very beginnings of photography. I just like the extra restrictions of minimal for some reason. I like not being able to crop in particular. Not entirely sure why. Using the in camera settings we can pretty much get contrast, tones and colour how we want them anyway. |

I agree this is most likely possible in all circumstances but why would anyone want to waste time doing that especially if you've found the scene you want taken the time to wait for the correct light conditions only to find that the settings that you found suitable previously just don't suit the scene in question now under these new circumstances. The same could be said for a shot like Jagar takes where he is out on the street he finds a great shot to take and finds that the contrast is not set as the shot would look best because he can now not tweak it.
Just seems a little too limiting to me and I am convinced that scores will end up lower in this challenge because the shots will not look their best, does that suggest that people take in to account that it's minimal editing or more that the voters like well processed images?
