I purchased a Cowboy Studio umbrella strobe set with a receiver and trigger. The flashes work when I push the test button on the trigger when it isn't connected to my camera. However, when I connect it to my camera, then it stops working. What am I doing wrong?

This is a really stupid question, but do you have it mounted backwards in the hotshoe on the camera? When I tried triggers for the first time, I put it backwards in the hot shoe.

Are you saying that the flash does not trigger when you trip the shutter or that the test button does not work when mounted, either? I think Wendy's suggestion might be your answer, it sounds like your trigger isn't getting the signal to trip. This may be due to improper mounting or due to a faulty product. Evaluate your shoes and ensure they line up.

Put the camera in manual mode and try it.

What is your shutter speed when you try?

i remember having the same issue. i think the wireless remote i have (cowboy studio) only works on the hot shoe in Manual and possibly in Av. set your camera to manual mode, set the shutter to 1/200 or 1/250 and try that.

granted i'm triggering a flash not an umbrella strobe but if it fires from the top button on the receiver then the camera isn't sending the signal.
