becuase the free stuff is better than the pay versions.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

I downloaded MSE on the computer with problems. It found one trojan, but there was still a redirect virus that it didn't fix.

So I went to the other computer and downloaded AVG -- things went fine. Didn't find anything. It shouldn't have found anything.

Decided to try AVG on the other computer since it still had issues.

Didn't know that some virus softwares don't like each other.

Now have a much bigger problem on the computer. Won't start up -- black screen. I can hit f2 and get into setup, but can't go beyond that. :(

If you just get black screen after the BIOS loads it could be hdd boot sector corruption. You could try WinPE to recover files and or fix the boot sector. I've used this free one before: //www.todo-backup.com/products/features/free-backup-software-winpe.htm . It has WinPE plus some hdd repair apps. It just boots a light version on windows from cd.

My experience is otherwise and I can only go by my experience.

Ok -- I feel quite stupid. It wasn't booting up because my son's angry birds thumb drive was plugged in. In my defense, usually it pops up with a message when that happens, not just a black screen.

In my defense again, it's just the feet of the angry birds, so it wasn't even obvious that the drive was plugged in. :)

It's that kind of ignorance as to why I have a high paying job.
It's amazing the companies that won't touch Unix/Linux based systems with a ten foot pole because it's free.

Ignorance? Hardly. Experience - definitely

Free tools are quite usable nowadays to cleanup virii. It\'s really not a problem. I haven\'t got a single virus between 2 computer systems over the course of the last 6 years. I scan using a couple free utilities every year, and have not seen a real loss in performance or even a single infection. I use a couple free tools to restrict scripts and changes to my registry without my knowledge. High price doesn\'t always equal quality, you gotta put that noggin to use a little bit too.

PS: Cosmicassasin, whats your job and can i haz it?!

I'm a quant (write the models and framework for the traders) for the Bank of Montreal. And yes, you're more than welcome to it.

well my experience is and i have tried them all believe me. McAfee and Norton are a joke. they dont do anything he free ones dont except bug you constantly and bog your system down. My ISP used to provide Norton and now it provides McAfee for free. its not like i am cheaping out by not using them, they just hog way too many resources for what you need.

i have tied Kapersky and it works well, pretty light weight, but again when MSE is free why bother with anything else?

You shouldn't feel that way Wendy, Its not something you think of right away especially if youre not looking at fixing this stuff on a day to day basis. You did quite well to figure it out.

+1000
What you need is nothing if you know how to run a tight ship on everything else.

I agree with you re McAfee and Norton. I have tried MSE/AVG/Avast/Panda etc but I can only say I would not recommend them or use them myself again. I use Kaspersky Pure and find it works for me.

I am just giving my opinion to vawendy , as she asked for recommendations, which we have given her.

I got some nasty viruses while using Norton. I've been using AVG since without any problems so far.

Best virus program Stuxnet

Best defense Avast

MSE is about the best out there. ther are no pop-ups and it runs quickly. It is the most recommended on the computer forums.

Two other good utilities.
SuperAntiSpyWare Free Edition

MBAM Free Edition

these only run on-demand and won't interfere with MSE.

I get McAfee for free and still won't use it.

I use MSE for my computer protection then I use a second program that has a Free version that runs flawlessly in windows Vista and windows 7. The program is called Threatfire.

//www.threatfire.com/

As with any software, use your own discretion, but I've used Microsoft Essentials and Threatfire together for awhile now with absolutely no problems.
The two scanners work very well together.

On windows I use MSE and I also run the full version of MBAM, they interact perfectly.

Don't suppose I need anything on the Mac but i do use Kaspersky, just in case.

why do people keep saying that? granted you are a bit more secure than with a windows systems, but when all you mac users keep thinking like that, this happens:

LOL yes, I said it because I was afraid of the Mac users slamming me for having one. My sister in-law has a good post in the technical support side of apple in Ireland, she suggested I get it.
