got my tubes today. after the discussion in this thread about close-up filters I said I would post some sample shots as comparison, so here they are, quick and dirty, full frame (only resized for the web) straight out of the camera, poor lighting and all!
Excuse the fact that these are crummy shots - they are just intended to compare magnification.
For this test, I started with a 50mm prime f/1.8 on manual focus with the subject about 2 feet away
Next, the 12mm tube is added and the subject was moved closer to the camera until it came into focus
Next, the 25mm tube replaces the 12mm and the subject was moved closer to the camera until it came into focus. You can already see very limited depth of field.
Next, the 36mm tube replaces the 25mm and the subject was moved closer to the camera until it came into focus
DOF is even shallower
Here is a shot with all 3 tubes stacked together and the subject was moved really close to the camera until it came into focus. DOF is *really* shallow.
Compare the above shots to my "Miniature" Challenge entry, which was taken with a Coolpix 4500. The Nikon's built in macro capability really rocks! (To be fair, though, this one has also been post processed, including sharpening)
Finally, however, here is a shot with the 50mm lens replaced with my 70-200mm f/4 L. The subject was moved backwards again to get it into focus. I did use autofocus on this shot and adjusted the exposure compensation. The thing I like here is the macro detail at a longer working distance (about 2 feet away again). It gives about the same level of detail as did the Coolpix shot which only had a working distance of about 1 inch from the figure.
I think this'll be a neat tool to use, but it doesn't look like a good substitute for a real macro lens.
