I vote we close this thread, it's teetering on verge methinks.

By the way Deb, facebook fans of my pictures are almost borderline silly in their adoration. ;)

No wonder some DPCers just can't be bothered to participate any more. There is too much envy and plain nonsense.
Forgot to add personal attacks. That's simply nasty.

Margaret, she didn't attack you personally. She made a comment about an image you submitted to a challenge. There's room for differences of opinion here.

Want MY opinion? Your shot's only marginally a "landscape", and its marginality has nothing to do with land vs sea. I'm 100% behind including seascapes in the landscape category; if I weren't, I'd be in a world oh hypocritcal trouble. No, the reason it's iffy to me is because it strikes me as a very engaging photograph of a STRUCTURE, an architectural photograph as it were, much more than as a landscape or seascape.

Heck of a nice picture though. I just wish you'd stop taking all this stuff so SERIOUSLY. It seems like you're always leaping to the defense of SOMETHING... Isn't it OK with you if people have different opinions than yours?

Incidentally, re: the prevailing attitude at 500px, that's another thing that's only marginally relevant. Why? For the simple reason that 500px is a gallery site, not a contest site. For better or for worse, DPC (by definition) attaches weight to categories that they otherwise wouldn't have to carry. There are going to be people who interpret categories loosely, and those who draw the lines very tightly. That's just the way it is. Nobody's "wrong" or "right", they just have opinions.

I'm reminded of the following passage from Pema Chodron's book, "When Things Fall Apart":

Originally posted by Pema Chodron:

When we're not in meditation, we could begin to notice our opinions just as we notice that we're thinking when we're meditating. This is an extremely helpful practice, because we have a lot of opinions, and we tend to take them as truth. But actually they aren't truth. They are just our opinions. We have a lot of emotional backup for these opinions. They are often judgmental or critical; they're sometimes about how nice or perfect something is. In any case, we have a lot of opinions.

Opinions are opinions, nothing more or less. We can begin to notice them, and we can begin to label them as opinions, just as we label thoughts as thoughts. Just by this simple exercise we are introduced to the notion of egolessness. All ego really is, is our opinions, which we take to be solid, real, and the absolute truth about how things are. To have even a few seconds of doubt about the solidity and absolute truth of our our opinions, just to begin to see that we do have opinions, introduces us to the possibility of egolessness. We don't have to make these opinions go away, and we don't have to criticize ourselves for having them. We could just notice what we say to ourselves and see how so much of it is just our particular take on reality which may or may not be shared by other people.

We can just let those opinions go, and come back to the immediacy of our experience. We can come back to looking at someone's face in front of us, to tasting our coffee, to brushing our teeth, to whatever we might be doing. If we can see our opinions as opinions and even for a moment let them go, and then come back to the immediacy of our experience, we may discover that we are in a brand-new world, that we have new eyes and new ears.

When I talk about noticing opinions, I'm talking about noticing them as a simple way of beginning to pay attention to what we think and do and how much energy comes along with that. Then we can also begin to realize how solid we make things and how easy it is to get into a war in which we want our opinions to win and someone else's to lose. It is especially tempting to do this when we're engaged in social action.

Peace, R

Great post Bear, if Pema was into photography she would tell us that the most essential aspect of it is the being in the instant and that taking the photo is the only important part.

If all we get a kick out of is the recognition of fellow photographers and the virtual ribbons we may obtain, then disappointment will certainly follow, it's nice to share and fun to compete but desire always leads to frustration, let's just practice the art of photography.

Margaret, chill out, you take fine photographs, relax end enjoy the experience.

I think everyone needs to take a deep breath and relax. It's a conversation about what constitutes a landscape. We can handle this. And we can handle a little levity, as well.

I don't think either will kill us. (although I could be wrong... Godzilla hasn't shown up yet...)

Agreed! This is the type of evolution I love and applaud from our ribbon masters here. Once you have had your fill of blue, red and yellow streaming down your profile page, you have earned the right to cut loose, take chances and do whatever the hell you want.

Ah, good! Now that I have a ribbon I'm only going to take pictures of my butt.

I don't mean to confuse you,and forget that the humour is a bit different.
But I rarely if ever post anything serious.
Just ignore me is perhaps best.

Are you calling his butt immense? Or your desire to see it?? ;p

And Don, don't go spoiling my idea for the "style of Jrmitz" challenge... ;)

Although I missed (and don't care to get) the connection to Don's panoramic butt, I love black licorice as well and nobody else in my family will eat it, which makes me love it even more. :)
