So my family saw this on the side of a bank:

it was trying to pull the fish out of the water:

It worked on it for quite awhile, but couldn't get it up the steep bank. He ended up putting it back into the water.

They couldn't tell if the fish was still moving in the beginning, but by the time they brought me over, the fish was definitely not moving. Yet snakes usually aren't carrion eaters, so we assumed he caught the fish. In searching on the net, it looks like snakes do indeed catch fish.

Lousy pictures -- but incredible to see.

A cajun was fishing in the bayu, and realized that he had fished until he was out of bait.
He spotted a big moccasin with a frog in it's mouth right near the boat, so he proceeded to catch the snake, and get the frog.
Well, he then had a problem. How could he release the snake without getting bitten?
He thought about it for a minute, then grabbed his bottle of Jack Daniels, and poured a shot down the snake to calm it down so he would not get bitten when he turned it loose.
It worked, so he put the frog on and went back to fishing.
In a few minutes he felt something bump his boot.
He looked down and there was that same moccasin, this time with two frogs in it's mouth.
It's hard to beat a good shot of Jack Daniels.

That's a pretty interesting photo of the snake with the fish. I don't believe that this one could eat a fish that size.
We have been having problems with snakes in the Everglades eating everything, including whole deer and gators.

I've been hearing about the snakes down there! Eating gators -- that's just unreal!!

We didn't think there could be any way that he could eat that fish. I know that they can unhinge their jaws ( well, actually another part coming into place, not actually unhinging,) but still...

I have seen snakes catch small fish before. We have a few varieties that enjoy the water at times, but nothing like out there.

I agree though- I don't think that snake will be downing the fish, largely due to the width of the snake's head in relation to the circumference of the fish. If it did manage to eat it, that would be a pretty slow moving snake afterwards, as well.
