Something I noticed today, ramp up the ISO on my 5D MKIII and the amount of available space on the card(s) goes down (incrementally) - currently set to RAW + JPEG with separate file types going to different cards.

Is this the noise reduction software making the JPEGs bigger? That seems counter intuitive since a block of (say) black should compress more efficiently than black with a bunch of noise - shouldn't it?

I don't know what else could be going on...

Noise reduction creates a black frame exposure for every image shot. Turn off noise reduction and you should see the issue disappear. Use it only when you need it. I almost never do.

Oh OK, but does that explain why 12800 ISO would give you less space than say 3200 ISO?

More noise = larger files (and less effective compression).

Wouldn't that explain it?

Yep, Neil beat me to it. The camera estimates the number of remaining images based on it's guess as to file size. When you ramp up the ISO, the higher noise will result in larger files, so the estimate of remaining shots goes down.

Of course - the answer was implicit within my own understanding that noise is data.
