I was only 14 six years ago. The Pentax was a relic then, and it a relic now.
She doesn't need to know a thing about Trad. darkroom operations. Ever heard of 1 hour photo's??

All I am saying that if she (or anyone) would want to turn their photography into something a bit serious, they would have to know how the light moves through the camera. And I don't think is helps having aperture/shutter/iso settings in different places on every different digi-compact out there. Having that traditional, and fundamental experience is priceless, and I have not seen a compact to date that can give that same level of understanding.

Do you reckon anyone first-timer with a point and click is going to do anything apart from point and click?

ATTN: Selina: I'll teach her how to use a full manual via email!!!!!

I was 15 when I got my first real camera (I had a leclick in middle school on 110 film). Anyhow, it was a Pentax k1000. I took a photo class at a local tech college and learned soooooo much! Do you live near your cousin? Could you teach her photography? If so, get her a cheap SLR off of ebay... any kind... just something to get her excited!

I just turned 14 :) and my Sony Mavica CD300 is pretty ez to use, I think it's a pretty cheap camera, too, but it's not a junky-type cheap camera, you know? Anyhoo, I like it.
So. That's my two cents' worth!

Without a HS education, paying for film and developing may slow down her learning of photography.

And a computer? printer? inks? papers? MEMORY CARDS??? how much will that all cost?

and yes, she doesn't have to print them, but going along with all the other arguments about her being a 'teenager'...

she doesn't want to look at a computer to see her photo's. she wants to get double prints of a few, give to friends, etc. put up on her walls.

ok: roll of film: AUD$7 or less, if she buys in 3's/4's.
processing cost: ??? havent done it in a while. less than AUD$10, surely.
extra prints: 50c or AUD1$

MAKING YOUR OWN IMAGES:::: FU**ING PRICELESS!!!!!

lets all go take photo's!!!!
