Greetings all,

After our Macro IV Challenge,
I took a good look at John Setzler's submission:

Breath of Fire

I shot a very similar
composition a month ago:

Reaching for the Sun.

What separates these two shots besides the obvious capabilities of the cameras? Composition.
John was creative with getting the blue background in it and a better crop/shooting angle.

Sometimes it isn't all about getting in as close as possible, but getting creative with the composition.
I bet Jacko will disagree with the not getting in as close as possible aspect though.
:)

While I agree with your comments, I really think the way John used the lighting is even more dramatic than the composition itself. That flower really seems to glow from inside.

Ain't no doubt, there are some really first class photgraphers here. The rest of us can just look and learn!

Comparing the two images shows the importance of negative space in composition. Sure, the blue in John's photo adds contrast and interest, but there is plenty of color contrast in Brad's too. It's the space around the anthers that really makes John's version work for me, and the lack of such space in Brad's that stifles the flow and upsets the balance, making it top- and right-heavy. Like Brad said, John's has a better crop.

Thanks for sharing, Brad. Comparisons like this one are very helpful in understanding why great photos are so appealing.
