Just got a free Sony Cybershot F828 with a million filters. Was wondering if anyone knew if I could turn this into an IR camera. Google searches are somewhat unfruitful, am hoping someone around here knows something they don't.

Christopher,

It already is an IR cam. All you need is an IR filter. The R1000 will give you straight monochrome, no visible light, images. You can go as low as about 720nm if you want a little visible light in the image. Below that, and you will also need neutral density filters to stop the visible light from overwhelming the image.

Edited for spelling..

Thanks.

I always thought most cameras have and IR filter overtop of the sensor and removing it was essential. If that doesn't need to be done and I just have to pick up a filter, than I should do my happy dance.

Switching the camera to night shot mode, moved the IR blocking filter out of the way. However in an attempt to thwart, ahem, X-ray, vision, they also open the aperature. If there is not a filter to only let IR through, the visible light will cause over exposure.

This is a shot with the F717 done in night shot mode, and with an R1000 filter.

the sony 707 was probably my favorite camera. i sold it to my niece when i went to the rebel and missed it terribly. she literally used it until it was beyond use and hasn't been happy with a camera since. sigh. they don't make 'em like they used to.
