The only question for me between now and rollover is....will this be my second highest score, or my third? : )

I love this community, so don't get me wrong....but I don't understand how the contest can be near 300 entries, but only 108 people have voted on my image. I'm assuming that the rest of the images are at about the same point. My opinion is that, if you enter a contest, you should be respectful enough to vote on all the other entries....since you'd like those people to vote on your image. |

So, who is supposed to vote in these FS challenges? At least you don't go through and leave comments (positive or negative) and then announce that you're only commenting, not voting. I really don't understand the inability of some to cast fair and objective votes when their images are in the competition. |

It's not necessarily a question of whether a person is able to vote fairly, but that often other people make blanket statements suggesting that people can't or don't, it's never nice to be unfairly accused..

I am aware that the person you allude to leaves their comments that way for a reason:
A) They don't vote in challenges they are entered in as they feel it would bias their vote. But they do want to show their appreciation or leave some feedback for what you have done.
B) If they just leave the comment, it might come in along with someone else's lowball vote and then you will wonder why you got a glowing comment with a vote of 2.

I'm not accusing anyone of not voting fairly. I'm saying not enough people vote... even when they have entered an image in a challenge. I strongly feel there is a responsibility to vote 100% of a challenge in which one has entered. There is a growing abdication of voting duties. This is skewing and scrambling the overall results sometimes. |

Reason "B" applied to me just yesterday. I saw an entry that created a scene using a particular item that I have an affection for and I had come close to doing pretty much the same thing myself. I just thought this was an amusing coincidence and left a comment telling them about it. I was not voting at the time but I know my own entries get sprinkled with nasty low votes. So I finished my comment letting them know I was not voting- just in case somebody else low voted them at the same time. When I think about it this is covering my butt I guess, but I do treat people fairly and behave in an ethical manner and don't like the thought of people mistakenly thinking I do otherwise... |

Yes, I understand this concern. I'm sure this can happen.
I've never had the time to sit on the refresh button and watch every vote come in. But, there seem to be some who have this obsession. It's never a good idea to correlate a comment with a vote. Worse yet to retaliate with a pay back vote on an presumed image of the person who left a comment. For the record, I sometimes time separate my voting from my commenting. I'm not worried about retaliatory votes because I don't score very well anyway. I'd just appreciate more votes from those who are participating in the challenge. |

With all due respect Richard, please see the emboldened sentence above, if you are not intentionally making the statement then you are surely doing it accidentally, this can be enough to put some people off.

It's not me saying that some people are voting unfairly. What is happening, I think, is that some people are unwilling to vote because they, themselves, feel they can't cast an unbiased vote.... in their own opinion. That is what I don't understand or comprehend. I think people should vote fairly and objectively.... as opposed to not voting at all.
My objection remains the paucity of votes. |

A photography site I used to participate in sends out an email to every registered member when voting started for a challenge, just to remind people that voting was "open" for that challenge. We have a lot of members who don't enter challenges much for whatever reason and may not have visited the site for a while and maybe they just need a reminder once in a while that their votes would be appreciated. We have a lot of challenges every week but maybe once a week or once a month, an email could be sent out to members reminding them that challenges are open for voting. Just a thought! |

This idea is actually helpful...rather than some earlier posts calling people out for not voting even though they are participating by commenting. Let's stay positive folks! |

I received 123 votes in the most recently completed FS challenge. There were 247 entries. I'm positive more participants could vote. There is a weekly email that I receive on Wednesday mornings from DPC announcing recent winners and promoting current challenges in voting phase and submission phase. That is an option one can select from their preferences page. |

Please re-read what you posted Richard, it clearly states that you "don't understand the inability of some to cast fair and objective votes". As I said, if you are not stating it intentionally it is certainly coming across that way, this is enough to put some people off voting. If you did not intend to make such a blanket statement then please consider wording your posts more carefully, when people read such things they are bound to question whether it is wise to vote lest they be accused [again] of a lack of integrity.
ETA: I agree generally about the lack of votes ;)
