I just got back from a 2 week trip where I used it probably 90% of the time... a LOT of which was in rain/drizzle all day.... Damn the thing never missed a beat (on a 7D) and the images are great.

I was really surprised how good the IS functions and how much of a step up from the Tammy 28-75 it is. Sharp [to me] shots down to 1/8sec is just amazing. I got it for this trip because I wanted the IS and some more length over the tammy (the 28 on a crop never bothered me but the 75 limit did). I think the tammy might just have to go to the auction block, as much as I love that lens.

Yeah it's not cheap but anyone on the fence, just buy it already.

You should try that bugger on a 35mm sensor... but make sure you've got something to wipe the drool :-)
Seriously, folks who have loved the Tammy 28-75 on APS-C have been a bit shocked by how the corners look on a 35mm frame. The 24-105 (and the 24-70 FWIW) don't have that problem to any great degree, though if you look carefully in the corners, there is some softness.

Gee thanks... a reminder that I really REALLY want FF 35mm digital is always welcome :-) I have some film bodies that I might whack it on for a try but I'm in two minds if that's such a great idea now :-) although I do have some film I have been meaning to finish off - hummmm. I'm just scared of getting a mk3 hankering since my budget will not wear it right now :-( How much do kidneys go for now days and can I sell both? :-)

I was happy with playing around after I got it but this trip pushed it more then I normally would - with all the rain and low light stuff - and it's just been great. I honestly have not missed the f2.8 on the tammy at all, at least for that trip (I took the 50f1.4 and used it less then I was expecting). I was constantly amazed at how much better focusing this one is in the dark over the tammy when in theory the tammy should be better with the 2.8 opening (and the camera has not changed).

I would buy it in a heartbeat if they sold it at 2.8....
it would require a small loan... but i ld do it!

sigh.. Back to saving for my 70-200 which i plan to purchase about 2 years from now..

im tempted but not sure whether to stump the etc up and upgrade my 28-70L to the mark 1 24-70L not the newest one, it is a nice walk around lens but i have the focal length covered already so its adding etc just for the convienece would be good in studio shoots though.

any images to show off?

what makes the 24-105 $500 less than the 24-70?

f4 vs f2.8

Mostly it's because of the f/2.8 vs f/4 thing. Faster lenses are more expensive even if they cover more limited range. Some also claim that the 24-70 is a bit sharper than the 24-105.

A full stop of light. FWIW, the difference is even greater if you compare it to the latest version of the 24-70, which is at $2300 (for pre-order, it's not shipping yet). It is interesting that the 24-105 goes for so much less, since it includes IS (not that I'm a big fan of IS on a WA lens).

If you have a mark III, the 24-105 is basically a 2.8 lens. If you gain a stop in noise control over the mark II then your f/4s act like 2.8s as far as shutter speed goes...

Translation: the newer generation sensors allow you to use a stop or two higher ISO with no loss of quality in the image; thus, f/2.8 is no longer strictly necessary as far as dialing up a faster shutter speed goes.

By way of illustration, I keep my 5D2 on ISO 200 and frequently use it at ISO 400 and can't see any difference in quality unless I really look hard at the pixel level. The 5D, on the other hand, is happiest at ISO 100. So basically all my lenses got faster :-)

What? That wasn't clear in my post? ;P Thanks for the clarification. That was exactly what I meant.

Heck, compared to my 300D, all my glass looks like it's f/1.2... :)
