Here's the deal - I need to get a mass storage (X-drive type device) urgently -- like by Friday. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the link... what I'm looking for though are suggestions on specifically what to buy, where and why.

Thanks,
Terry

Also those prices are in GBP - I doubt a British company can guarantee me delivery in the UB by Friday. Any other suggestions?

Not sure I can recall ever having done that to you in the past, but thanks for the correction.

US -- sorry. - It's late, I'm tired and agitated.

Anyone have any suggestions relevant to the problem at hand?

-Terry

US seller of X-drives

The above has in USD various types of portable storage. I've read that the X-drive II is pretty good and fairly fast. Size is dependent on how much you want to spend and how much you'll think you will need.

If you do a search in the forums you'll find various threads talking about portable storage options.

all joking aside now...I've never ordered from this site but I know someone who did.

The link moodville provided is for My Digital Discount and they've told me they'll ship items within 1-2 business days, but I don't know if their shipping options allow for next-day delivery.

I've ordered from The Discount Shop and they claim same day shipping for "most items" (I'd call and ask).

You definitely want something like the X's-drive or a Tripper both of which have USB 2.0 support (I'm pretty sure they don't sell old USB 1.1 X's-drives anymore). Both shops sell these items.

The Tripper works as advertised and you can get about 5G of transfer on a single charge (if field battery life is a concern).

What are the relative advantages of the Tripper vs. the X's-drive.

I have the 10 GB version of this.

Love it, except I wsih I had a bigger hard drive in mine.

edit: Brought mine to my recent 2 week Greece trip, never worried about running out of space.

//www.insidecomputer.com/performance_comparison.htm
and
//shop.store.yahoo.com/insidecomputer/faq.html

Xs-drive PRO might be the way to go, maybe a bit pricier. If you happen to want an mp3 player at the same time that is.

I don't think there's much difference really. That FAQ says the Super Digibin is fastest for card to device writes, but the tripper is fastest for device to computer. The Tripper has always done its thing (card to device) faster than I have filled another card, but that depends on you and your shooting circumstances.

Well, if it's not too late and you are handy enough to put a hard
drive in the thing your self you can save a few bucks.

x's drive pro $95

40 GB 2.5" Hard Drive $85

Being able to store 6000+ images,..., priceless!:D

I've ordered a number of times from //www.mydigitaldiscount.com. My friend did have an issue with an item being out of stock, so it took a while. Generally though if it's in stock, it's shipped very quickly.

They also have a fair choice of drives.

I can have something shipped transatlantic from them quicker than I can from a lot of UK companies.

Edit: Mental note to read threads before posting..

Someone else here mentioned the iPod and it's worth a look for its versatility alone. There are at least two adapters available for downloading flash media to the iPod (not especially fast, but they're effective). The iPod gives you the added versatility of an MP3 player (obviously), an address book, calendar, bootable Firewire hard drive, games, etc., in a package that's smaller and more elegant than most standalone hard drives, and there are an enormous number of cases, adapters and other accessories available.

Anywhere from 15-40Gb is a good size. The Special Deals section of Apple's online store usually has cheaper refurbs, which carry the same warranty as a new one. I would have provided a link, but it looks like the site is down for a few minutes (usually means they're about to release new hardware).

With a hard drive, you might save a few bucks, but then that's all you've got.

Yeah but from what I have read it has an extremely slow transfer rate
when reading compact flash through the adapter. Something comparable
to usb 1!
The X's Drive Pro also doubles as a mp3 player. That is why I suggested it. And it's cheaper

You can plug an iPod directly into your BMW (the sound port, not the power adapter). I don't think you can look at the pictures on the DVD player though : (

Last week I bought:

ARCHOS GMINI 220

I bought it mainly because I am going away for a few weeks and plan on taking loads of digital pictures, I wanted a device that would enable me to clear my flash cards regularly and I didn't want to take my laptop (well work's laptop).

Its smaller than the I-pod, I think it looks just as sexy, it retails for about £250 which is a bit less than the I-pod 20gb but I bought mine used from amazon.co.uk for £180

It has built in compact flash reader, microphone and line in for recording stuff and a flipping huge 2.5inch screen for previewing jpgs (they are rubbish quality but it lets me check they have copied over OK

20gb hard drive, in line remote with FM receiver and microphone.

Its absolutely fantastic, better than I could have imagined and inmy opinion far better than an ipod.

I have had this mass storage device for over a year. Great item for the money. I've had no problems with it at all.
