Hey thanks Mike for your honesty. Before I started at dpc I wasn't keen on overcooked images but since discovering the joys of Topaz Adjust, I just can't resist cooking my photos. |

you should.
in all seriousness, topaz adjust i admittedly use from time to time. but only to add a slight punch to the details to bring out some colors that didnt otherwise exist.
i used to overcook my images too and i had to stop after i went back and looked at them and saw how awful they looked. |

I liked this one - I thought it was colorful and definitely portrayed "empty" which was the challenge. But there were other images that resonated more with me and "hit a chord" as someone else described it.
My newb eye thought it was a great representation of empty, but I thought maybe a bouquet of balloons the day after a party would have equally portrayed empty but also had more of a story to tell. |

Thanks Mike - I am sure I will do the same and look back on all these over-cooked images and think what the heck was I thinking. All part of the learning process I guess:) |

Like this outtake??? I should have used it. My pre-entry jury was split.
"Party's Over"
Not final version, BTW

Kevin, gotta ask, what's with the 3 balloons? I look at both of those images and think that a single balloon could have brought a lot more to the image than all 3. |

Going with the classic "Rule of Threes" (not Rule of Thirds) as well as the RGB connection... |

Kevin, the outtake is on par with the original. Time for a new per-entry jury! |

I personally liked the RGB - didnt make the rule of threes connection. The second image outtake you showed would have scored a bit higher for me, because it really makes me think about the emptiness after a party. the three empty baloons feels quickly put together, but the outtake tells more of a story. *edit: now thinking about the air forced out of the otherwise full (of air) baloons... They are in a sense, empty either way.*
Thats how i feel about it anyways, take it with a grain of kosher salt

I'd settle for a 1/10th of the ribbons of my trusted advisers. To be fair, I give them a choice and they simply tell me which is the best of the choices... They don't ever say "Don't bother with any of them"
The fault lies solely with the photographer. |

Oh wow - yeah, I do like that one alot better. I like the idea of a hidden backstory - it makes me more interesting to me. I realize it doesn't make it more photographically /technically awesome - but I can only vote what I feel.
Would have scored that one higher. |

I want to apologize. I broke rule 3 and didn't realize it, and then I started a whole wave of people breaking rule 3:
3. To keep this thread small, post a comment on the photo or send a PM with your suggestions. Using the comment section is more helpful because the comments stay with the image and others can see them and learn from them.
Sorry, Kevin!! |

No problem. I was too busy crying from your stinging comment that I didn't notice through my tears. :) |

A not-quite-six (aka "tiny violin") in the Landscape challenge. I particularly seem to have trouble doing landscapes and seascapes, which just somehow seems wrong given where I live. So any help in how to do these better would be greatly appreciated. As an aside, it's a huge hit on Facebook! :-) |

Even though the sky directly above seems clear, all the colors seem somewhat muted as if under foggy light. It's nice and subtle and relaxing, but in a voting contest I think you want people to get more "excited."
The first thing I'd try with this is to apply "high-radius UnSharp Mask" to increase the contrast and make it "pop" more -- try (PS terms) about 15%, 50 radius, and 0 threshold for a DPC entry-sized image ... I can post a sample later when I get home if you want.
I might also try to get a little more blue in the sky and yellow into the plants with a Curve applyed to the Blue channel.

Here's a jpg of the middle exposure. I have a tendency to try not to go too far when I really need to go further with the editing. I will give the things you suggest a try later today!
Is the composition OK? I'm trying to work on more dynamic compositions. (And yes, the light is fog-diffused by the marine layer as it rolls in.)
Thanks for the feedback! |
