I already recieved 5 comments on how I used neat image on my picture from the feet challenge. The problem his, I didn't. I'm probably losing points because I already recieved a comment saying that I used a bit too much smoothing from NI. it's kinda frustrating. But still I,m doing ok so far in the note. Just needed to rant (guess I should have put it in the rant forum)

sometimes if you trust the photographer who left the comment you can contact them with a private message and let them know you did not use NI. But it can also work the other way and they could vote down a little.
Sometimes you just have to let it slide and hope for the best

it doesn't really matter if you used it or not. their opinion is it looks a certain way, regardless of how it happened. the comment is relevant, even if inaccurate.

I received a comment on a portrait of my three-year-old that I obviously used WAY too much makeup. Of course, she wasn't wearing makeup (uh... hello?). That photo was my first score over 7, so of course I was watching every vote and worrying over every little criticism, but I didn't PM the commentor. It's just one vote, and these are only virtual ribbons, so what difference does it make really? I got a good chuckle out of it. |

Yup just so. I have gotten the most "oversharpened " commennts on a shot that didn't get any USM because it was sharp out of the box. The fact that they were wrong about how it got that way dosen't change the fact that they thought it was too much "that way" anyway. Though they are wrong about the cause, they belive, rightly of wrongly, that your shot suffers from a defect that they expressed as a symptom (too smooth in your case)and they wrongly conjecture at a cause. The fact that they are wrong about the why does not make them wrong about the what. even though you didn't use a noise supression program, is the shot lacking in the sort of detail that makes it look plastic? If they asked for a bit more grain or noise, would they be wrong?

For the purpose of complaining about voters in a thread... yes. |

I would prefer something like you said,
I would prefer people to say what's wrong than to figure how you got there. I never said they where wrong saying that maybe the picture is to smooth. I just don't like the fact that they think it's because of Post-process. there is a difference.
I'm not complaining about voters. So far, i'm going for a high score of over 7 right now. I don't like people presuming that's all.

Early on, I also received a comment that I had used too much Neatimage. I had no idea what that meant since I had never heard of that before so, after the challenge, I PM'd the person who left the comment and said that I did not use NeatImage, did not know what it was and what exactly in the picture looked like I overused it so that I could avoid whatever was wrong the next time. It was a polite response to their critique and I really wanted an explanation so I could learn.
I never got a reply.
I still don't really understand what NeatImage does more than vaguely, and I still don't know what (according to one person) I did wrong with that shot (I also did not know about or use unsharpen mask).
Maybe that explains the high percentage of sub 5 averages I have been getting lately.

I just started using Neat Image myself...my feet entry is the first one I have ever used it on. Works well at getting rid of graininess and making the photo a lot "smoother" looking.

Now that the challenge is over, thanks to everyone that commented. For the others that thought that my picture had to much Neat Image, here is the original and the challenge entry so you can see that no NI was used. The model just has nice feet :)
after post process of resizing, desaturating, contrast level and a slight burning at the top of the cloth. This is what I got
Thanks to all :)
