In the UK we have groups of families travelling around the country in caravans, purporting to be gypsies. They flout all taxes, laws, squat on private and public land, whilst operating businesses offering shoddy goods or services. The areas they settle in always suffers from damage, theft, noise, pollution etc. and the government does nothing to help the local councils to stop them.
We call them " Travellers "
Here is a local site near my workplace that two months ago was a modern, office block and car park, fully heated, alarmed and fit for use,
Until they arrived.

Paul, looked at all the pictures and was really surprised by what a huge amount of damage has been done. It baffles me why people need to destroy things. All the garbage in the parking lot is bad enough put could be easily but right - but the building has been damaged so heavily that it will be very expensive to fix it.

Here in the USA we don't have squatters or gypsies but there are lots of destructive young people who destroy things just for fun or paint graffiti all over it.

Thank goodness the travellers are gone from your area for now.

Hi Sammie,
The building is earmarked for demolition, the new owner wants to replace it with houses, nevertheless they have stolen everything, lighting, heating, flooring, ceilings etc. and to cap it all off, the site and lovely riverbank that passes by the side is littered as you can see with everything imaginable including human waste, the stench is horrible.

Paul, I was wondering if there was human waste, too. If they are living in caravans (trailers in the USA) you would have to do something with it. We have a nice trailer with a bathroom but you have to do something with the waste when the black water fills up.

It will take a while to clean up all the mess they made, that's for sure. I can't believe the amount of garbage around; furniture, propane containers, bricks - everything.

There is a group here in the USA called "Rainbow People" who camp out in the woods for around a month in an area and then leave. They are kind of like hippies. They have to have permission to stay somewhere though. Several years ago they camped in the woods not too far from us and they would come in the local stores and steal everything. They left tons of garbage and human waste, too. I doubt they'll ever get pemission to stay around here again.

The rainbows camped in around my area, too, about 10 years ago. there was big protest before they got here, and a bigger one after they left. I was amazed that people who were "just trying to commune with nature" (their argument) left it looking, smelling, etc so badly. Sad really.

I've always felt you should leave a place (especially nature) neater and cleaner than you found it. Even if it means packing out someone else's trash.
